Mark Munoz can credit his tenacity for the boost to his bank account.
Munoz and “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 3 winner Kendall Grove were awarded matching $75,000 “Fight of the Night” bonuses after their wild middleweight encounter at UFC 112 “Invincible” on Saturday at the Ferrari World Concert Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Nearly finished multiple times inside the first five minutes, Munoz rallied from behind and put away Grove with some nasty second-round ground-and-pound. A national champion and two-time All-American wrestler at Oklahoma State University, the once-beaten 32-year-old has delivered three consecutive victories since his brutal knockout loss to Matt Hamill at UFC 96 in March 2009.
Meanwhile, Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Rafael dos Anjos pocketed a $75,000 bonus for “Submission of the Night” after he coaxed a tapout from surging Englishman Terry Etim with a second-round armbar. Etim had never before been finished.
Finally, “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 9 finalist DaMarques Johnson banked a $75,000 “Knockout of the Night” bonus after he dropped International Fight League veteran Brad Blackburn with a body kick in the third round of their preliminary welterweight bout. The 27-year-old Johnson has posted back-to-back wins since his submission loss to James Wilks at “The Ultimate Fighter 9” Finale in June.
