UFC 127 Official with 12 Bouts Signed
Mike Whitman Jan 12, 2011
The dance card for the UFC’s upcoming trip to Australia is now
complete with 12 fights, as Tie Quan
Zhang will meet Jason
Reinhardt in a featherweight duel at UFC
127.
The bout, first reported last week by Portal do Vale Tudo, was made official by the promotion on Wednesday. UFC 127 will be headlined by a welterweight showdown between former two-division champion B.J. Penn and longtime 170-pound contender Jon Fitch. The event will go down Feb. 27 at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia.
Zhang and Reinhardt were originally supposed to meet in a
lightweight tilt at WEC
51 in September, but the bout was scratched due to Reinhardt
failing a pre-fight eye exam. Initially a replacement for Alex
Karalexis, Reinhardt was then replaced by Pablo Garza.
Zhang submitted Garza with a first-round guillotine choke that
earned “The Mongolian Wolf” both his first victory in the WEC and
on American soil.
Zhang is coming off the first loss of his career, a unanimous decision defeat to Daniel Downes at WEC 53 in December. After a strong opening period, Zhang began to slow and Downes capitalized, eventually earning a unanimous decision win. UFC 127 will mark the Chinese fighter’s first try at the featherweight division.
Reinhardt -- who has since undergone laser eye surgery to correct his vision problem -- has not competed in three years. After winning his first 18 fights, he was submitted by Joe Lauzon in his 2007 UFC debut. Reinhardt won his next two fights in smaller shows, but has not fought since January 2008 due to injuries.
