UFC 136 Bonuses: Edgar, Lauzon, Phan, Garcia Bank $75K Each

Four fighters walked away from the Toyota Center in Houston with UFC 136 postfight bonuses, as Frankie Edgar, Joe Lauzon, Nam Phan and Leonard Garcia each took home an extra $75,000 for their efforts on Saturday night.

Edgar was awarded “Knockout of the Night” after disposing of Gray Maynard in their lightweight title headliner, and Lauzon earned “Submission of the Night” for his lightning-quick victory over Melvin Guillard. Phan (Pictured, file photo) and Garcia shared “Fight of the Night” honors for their exciting, three-round affair.

Maynard did not mirror his performance in the first round of his second bout with Edgar, but he came close. The Xtreme Couture fighter rocked the champion with a massive uppercut midway through the round and followed up with sustained offense which bloodied Edgar’s face and hurt him badly. The ever-resilient Edgar survived, however, working diligently to win rounds two and three before stunning the challenger with a right uppercut and pouncing with a flurry of hooks that sealed Maynard’s demise, retaining his title with a fourth-round technical knockout.

Lauzon wasted no time in taking care of business, stunning Guillard with a short left hand only moments into the bout. As a wobbly Guillard shot for a takedown, Lauzon took his back, sinking in both hooks and applying a fight-ending rear-naked choke which forced “The Young Assassin” to tap out only 47 seconds into the opening stanza.

Phan and Garcia did not disappoint in their rematch. The bout largely resembled their first encounter, as Phan landed accurately while Garcia swung for the fences in the first two rounds. However, the Jackson’s MMA product found success in the third stanza, dropping Phan with a left hook and cracking him with another hard shot that wobbled Phan against the cage. Phan would not be denied, and “The Ultimate Fighter” alum was awarded the bout 29-28 on all three judges’ scorecards.
