UFC 141 Medical Supensions: Diaz, ‘Janitor,’ Gamburyan Face 6 Months

Four fighters from Saturday’s UFC 141 “Lesnar vs. Overeem” have been handed potential six-month medical suspensions by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

The NSAC on Tuesday released to Sherdog.com a full list of suspensions from the event, which closed out the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s calendar year at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Lightweight Nate Diaz, who out-boxed Donald Cerrone for the better part of 15 minutes to earn a unanimous decision in the evening’s co-headliner, was suspended until June 28 with no contact until Jan. 21 for damage sustained to his right eye. Diaz can be green-lit to fight sooner if the eye is cleared by an ophthalmologist. Cerrone was suspended until Feb. 14 with no contact until Jan. 30 for a cut on his lower lip.

Veteran Vladimir Matyushenko was suspended until June 28 after injuring his left knee in a first-round stoppage loss to light heavyweight up-and-comer Alexander Gustafsson, who got a one-month suspension for a right tibia contusion. Featherweight Manny Gamburyan reinjured his right shoulder in a decision defeat to Diego Nunes. Both Matyushenko and Gamburyan can be cleared to compete sooner by orthopedic doctors; Gamburyan was also ordered to undergo x-rays.

Former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, who was mauled by new No. 1 contender Alistair Overeem in the main event of UFC 141, was also suspended until June 28 for an abdominal injury. The suspension seems unlikely to come into play, however, as Lesnar announced his retirement from fighting immediately after the first-round TKO loss.
