UFC 168 Weigh-In Results: Chris Weidman, Anderson Silva Hit Marks for Title Rematch

By Brian Knapp Dec 27, 2013
Chris Weidman now takes his turn as the hunted.

Weidman checked in at 184 pounds, as he prepares to defend the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight crown against former champion Anderson Silva (185) in the UFC 168 main event on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Women’s bantamweight titleholder Ronda Rousey (135) and archrival Miesha Tate (135), who will duke it out for UFC gold in the co-headliner, also met their contracted weight requirements without issue at Friday’s official weigh-in.

A little less than six months after he dethroned Silva with a stunning second-round knockout, Weidman must confront “The Spider” once more. The undefeated Serra-Longo Fight Team representative was a four-time collegiate wrestling All-American at Nassau Community College and Hofstra University before moving to MMA under the watchful and capable eyes of former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra and striking coach Ray Longo. The 29-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt has ascended quickly to the summit of the 185-pound division, armed with a potent ground game and improving standup. Weidman has compiled a 6-0 mark since arriving in the UFC, scoring four finishes in those six appearances.

The defeat to Weidman brought an end to Silva’s historic reign atop the 185-pound division. It covered 2,457 days and 16 fights inside the Octagon, including wins over onetime UFC champions Rich Franklin (twice), Vitor Belfort and Forrest Griffin, former two-division Pride Fighting Championships titleholder Dan Henderson and 2007 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist Demian Maia. His place in history secure, Silva, 38, has never suffered consecutive defeats as a professional.

UFC 168 “Weidman vs. Silva 2” -- which airs at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT -- will also feature a high-stakes heavyweight scrap pairing Josh Barnett (252) with Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts export Travis Browne (242), a lightweight clash pitting AMA Fight Club’s Jim Miller (156) against Fabricio Camoes (156) and a featherweight tilt matching “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 14 winner Diego Brandao (*153) with American Top Team standout Dustin Poirier (146).

Two hours prior, Fox Sports 1 will carry four preliminary bouts: Chris Leben (185.5) vs. Uriah Hall (185), Gleison Tibau (156) vs. Michael Johnson (156), Dennis Siver (145) vs. Manny Gamburyan (146) and John Howard (171) vs. Siyar Bahadurzada (171). The two remaining undercard matchups will stream to the UFC’s Facebook page at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, as “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil” Season 2 finalist William Macario (171) meets Bobby Voelker (171) and Arizona Combat Sports representative Estevan Payan (145) faces Robbie Peralta (145.5).
