Daniel Pineda vs. Robert Whiteford

Round 1

Whiteford opens with an inside leg kick, answered by Pineda with a kick to the body. The featherweights move into the pocket to throw hard punches, Whiteford landing to the body and Pineda upstairs. Another loud body kick from Pineda draws an “ooh” from the partisan crowd, and “The Pit” moves in to clinch. Whiteford reverses and shoves Pineda against the fence, working some foot stomps and short knees to the body. Whiteford’s looking for a trip but Pineda defends well and peppers the Scot with palm strikes. Referee Don Turnage tells the fighters to work off the cage, and Whiteford completes his takedown. Pineda scrambles right back up, only to be dragged down again. Whiteford tries to advance past Pineda’s butterfly guard, can’t, and instead hits Pineda with a knee to the gut on the way up. Referee Turnage finally restarts them with 1:40 on the clock. Whiteford stays on the outside, absorbing a couple leg kicks before ducking inside to pop Pineda with a left hand. Another left gets Whiteford inside and he follows up with a short right hook. Pineda looks to attack in the last 10 seconds, misses with a jumping knee and spinning kick.

Whiteford shoots a quick double-leg and puts Pineda on his back away from the fence. Pineda keeps him in open guard, though Whiteford isn’t trying hard to advance. Whiteford stands after a minute and allows Pineda to do the same. Pineda changes levels for a double on the fence and completes it, but Whiteford won’t stay down. The featherweights separate and Whiteford is on his back foot again. He tags Pineda with a left high kick; Pineda stays standing but the kick has opened a cut on the outside of his right eye. Pineda keeps marching forward, grinning at Whiteford, who hits him with another shin-to-face kick. Whiteford clinches Pineda on the fence, works a couple knees to the legs before Pineda rolls underneath, grabbing at Whiteford’s legs. Whiteford comes down to defend as Pineda leans back, trying to finish a heel hool. Whiteford smiles and puts a thumb up, then yanks his leg free and takes side control. Pineda sits up against the fence and Whiteford drills him with a knee to the chest. Pineda powers back to his feet and spends the final 15 seconds chasing Whiteford around the cage.

Pineda scores with a few elbows from his back before they’re stood up. Whiteford ducks under a spinning back fist and scores another takedown. This time, Pineda rolls immediately for another heel hook, but again Whiteford defends. They stand for a few seconds before Whiteford double-legs Pineda down again, now with 2:20 on the clock. Pineda throws up a triangle and Whiteford leans back to defend, breaks the hold and moves to side control. Pineda puts the Scot back in guard, but only for a few seconds, as they’re stood up again. Whiteford shoots a long double and gets shoved to the ground, with Pineda coming down on top in half guard. Strickland keeps his balance and winds up pressed against the fence, looking for a trip takedown of his own. Strickland gets McDaniel to the ground and stands over him, controlling the legs and looking to come down to the Greg Jackson student’s guard. Campuzano gets up but again takes a couple hard left hands along the way. Scoggins goes low with a pair of kicks on the right, then up top with a left high kick. Forte picks at Trevino with punches until Trevino explodes out and up. Trevino’s time on his feet is short-lived, as Forte spins him back to the mat and looks to take back control. Forte gets a takedown with about one minute left, but Trevino is back on his feet 20 seconds later. Trevino scores a double-leg takedown of his own against the fence, then catches Forte in a headlock as they stand. Trevino gets the takedown, Forte stands, and Trevino goes for a single-leg, then releases when Forte threatens with a guillotine. Trevino breaks off, cracking Forte with a spinning back elbow on the split. Forte grabs a rear waistlock but can’t keep it and winds up defending a takedown with a wide base against the cage. Trevino takes the back standing and drives knees into the back of Forte’s thigh, then lands another elbow as he slips out. Trevino zaps Forte with a three- or four-punch combo midway through the final round. A hard right hand from Trevino has Forte turning around. A couple chopping low kicks land for Trevino, but now Forte answers back with a nice right hand. Takedown goes for Forte with 1:20 remaining; he tries to take Trevino’s back, but Trevino stands and shakes him off. Hettes stands, eats a hard right hand and answers with a nice left hook of his own. Yet another takedown goes for Bermudez, then an overhand right behind a missed knee. Bermudez is just tossing Hettes around, but Hettes won’t stay on the ground and keeps coming forward on the feet, absorbing all the punches Bermudez can throw. Round 1

Pennington works to adjust the choke as she keeps her base against the fence but eventually loses her grip. Andrade takes the outside position, then completes a takedown but doesn’t manage much on top before Pennington scoots back to the fence and stands. Andrade uses Pennington’s momentum to toss her back to the ground and lands on top in half guard. Andrade stands to drop punches and leaves her right arm in Pennington’s guard, allowing “Rocky” to try an armbar. Andrade freezes and waits to yank the arm free when Pennington moves to adjust. The bantamweights lock up on the cage again, but Andrade backs out after Pennington goes for the plum again. Andrade is just bull-rushing now, walking straight ahead on Pennington with constant punches and finding the most success with her right. When they hit the fence again, Pennington snares Andrade’s head in a guillotine and leans back to crank the choke. Gastelum comes off the fence, pops Story with a punch and then knocks him to the ground with a head kick. Story clings to Gastelum in butterfly guard, blocking the pass. Gastelum adjusts and passes to side control, then jumps on Story’s back when he tries to stand. Story shakes him off and they’re back on their feet with 90 seconds to go. A right straight-left cross combo stings Story, and Gastelum follows up with an uppercut. Gastelum whiffs on a high kick as the welterweights square off in the center. Story catches an outside leg kick and hits Gastelum with a right to the body. Another leg kick from Story, countered by a Gastelum jab. Gastelum wades into the pocket and gets tagged with a pair of punches. Story hits a right hook up top, then one to the breadbasket. Gastelum comes around the outside with a right hand, then a hard two-piece and a jab. Story double-pumps a jab of his own but Gastelum is turning up the heat in the last minute. The pace slows with 30 seconds left until Gastelum rushes straight into a sweeping Story left hand. Gastelum is wobbly and Story blitzes him with shots on the fence, knocking him to the ground. Gastelum puts the fight on the fence and takes the outside position, and they trade knees before shoving off. Right after they separate, Gastelum drills Story with three or four fast punches. Story is dazed, moving backward, and now Gastelum dumps him to the ground. Story slips out from underneath and leaps on the kneeling Gastelum’s back.
