A middleweight clash between Nate Marquardt and Brad Tavares has been added to the UFC 182 lineup.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal first reported the matchup, and Tavares later confirmed the bout via Twitter. UFC 182 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Jan. 3 and is headlined by a light heavyweight title tilt between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier. In the evening’s co-main event, Ronda Rousey will defend her women’s bantamweight strap against Cat Zingano.
After three consecutive losses at 170 pounds, Marquardt returned to middleweight at UFC Fight Night in New Zealand on June 28, when he submitted James Te Huna with an armbar 4:54 into the first round of their headlining encounter. The 35-year-old Coloradoan began his UFC tenure at 185 pounds, falling short in his bid for promotional gold against Anderson Silva at UFC 73.
Tavares began his Octagon career with wins in eight of his first nine appearances. That momentum has slowed of late, however, as the Hawaiian has dropped consecutive fights to Yoel Romero and Tim Boetsch in his last two outings.
