It was a night of abundant riches for Fabricio Werdum.
In addition to heavyweight gold, Werdum earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his victory over Cain Velasquez in the UFC 188 main event!
Werdum submitted Velasquez with a guillotine choke 2:13 into round three of Saturday’s headliner at Mexico City Arena in Mexico City on Saturday night. The Brazilian weathered the storm from Velasquez in round one and battered his foe with punching combinations and knees in the clinch in round two. With Velasquez clearly fading, Werdum secured the fight-ending tapout in the third frame.
Meanwhile, Yair Rodriguez and Charles Rosa earned $50,000 “Fight of the Night” paychecks for their spirited featherweight scrap. Thanks to a creative striking arsenal and an active guard, the Mexican fighter was able to capture a hard-earned split decision despite Rosa landing multiple takedowns.
Finally, Patrick Williams captured the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award with a first-round guillotine choke of “The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America” winner Alejandro Perez in a preliminary bantamweight clash. Williams dropped his opponent with a right uppercut and overhand right before eliciting a tapout from Perez in 23 seconds, the fastest submission in UFC bantamweight history.
