Gunnar Nelson will face John Hathaway in a welterweight matchup at UFC 189.
Promotion officials announced the pairing on Wednesday. UFC 189 takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on July 11 and is headlined by a featherweight title tilt between Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor. In the evening’s co-main event, Robbie Lawler defends his welterweight strap against Rory MacDonald.
Nelson suffered the first loss of his professional career last October, dropping a split decision to Rick Story at UFC Fight Night in Stockholm. The 26-year-old Iceland native began his promotional tenure with four consecutive victories, including three by way of submission. “Gunni” has finished 12 of his 13 career triumphs inside the distance.
Hathaway hasn’t competed since March 2014, when he was knocked out by a Dong Hyun Kim spinning back elbow in the third round of a UFC Fight Night event in Macau. “The Hitman” is 6-2 in the Octagon overall, with notable triumphs over Diego Sanchez and Story.
