It was fun while it lasted.
Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem earned “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their heavyweight championship bout in the UFC 203 headliner at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland on Saturday. Overeem floored Miocic early in the fight but failed on a follow-up guillotine. As the Dutchman’s defenses faltered, Miocic picked up the intensity of his attack, ultimately finishing the contest with ground-and-pound 4:27 into the opening stanza.
Elsewhere, Jessica Andrade received a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for her dominant performance against Joanne Calderwood in a featured strawweight encounter. The Brazilian landed a pair of takedowns, passed to side control and ultimately locked in a guillotine choke when Calderwood attempted to scramble to her feet at the 4:38 mark of round one.
Finally, Yancy Medeiros received the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” check for his second-round submission of Sean Spencer in a preliminary welterweight affair. The Hawaiian fighter dropped his foe with a head kick in the second frame and then transitioned from a guillotine to a rear-naked choke to secure the tapout 49 seconds into the period.
