They’re going to be talking about Demetrious Johnson’s submission of Ray Borg for quite some time.
“Mighty Mouse” received a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his record-breaking victory over Borg in the UFC 216 co-main event on Saturday night — and he authored a serious “Submission of the Year” candidate in the process. With time winding down in the fifth frame, Johnson executed a belly-to-back suplex, released Borg in midair and transitioned to an armbar to earn a tapout 3:15 into the period.
Elsewhere, Lando Vannata and Bobby Green earned “Fight of Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their wild lightweight scrap. Vannata appeared to be on the verge of a finish in the opening stanza, but Green was able to recover after the Jackson-Wink product was deducted a point for an illegal knee. For the final two rounds, the two combatants went back-and-forth, ultimately battling to a majority draw.
Finally, John Moraga pocketed the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for his first-round knockout of Russian prospect Magomed Bibulatov. Moraga grazed Bibulatov with a right hand over the top before sending his foe toppling to the canvas with a left hook 1:38 into the opening frame.
