UFC 73 "Stacked" Play-by-Play

Sherdog.com reports from the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif. with live play-by-play of UFC 73, which is headlined by Anderson Silva versus Nathan Marquardt (Pictures) and features a light heavyweight showdown between Tito Ortiz (Pictures) and Rashad Evans (Pictures).

Mark Bocek vs. Frank Edgar (Pictures)
Round 1
Edgar lands his right hand at will early in the contest, connecting with three hard shots. Bocek is stunned by another right hand and momentarily takes a knee, but Edgar can't capitalize. Bocek gets back to his feet and shoots in without success. Bocek switches levels and attempts a tackle, but Edgar stuffs it and takes top position. Bocek turtles up to avoid punishment, and appeared to be rolling to escape when referee Jon Schorle stepped in to halt the bout at 4:55 of the opening period. Frank Edgar wins by TKO (strikes).

Jason Gilliam (Pictures) vs. Chris Lytle (Pictures)
Round 1
Lytle lands a solid punches early in the contest before crushing Gilliam with an overhead right. The fighters trade low kicks, with Lytle getting the better of the exchanges. A wild scramble ensues and Lytle takes the top position. Gilliam attempts a leg lock but Lytle has none of it. Lytle moves to side-control where he locks up a triangle choke from the top position. He tightens the hold and applies a keylock to Gilliam's exposed arm. Gilliam taps shortly after at 2:15 of the first round.

Diego Saraiva (Pictures) vs. Jorge Gurgel (Pictures)
Round 1
Back and fourth exchange of wild strikes in the opening minute from Gurgel and Saraiva. Gurgel landed the harder shots and snapped Saraiva's head back twice. Saravia shot unsuccessfully, but was able to pull guard. Gurgel controlled the top position and landed some some strong ground-and-pound. With 15 seconds remaining in the frame, Gurgel stood up and was met with a few hard punches, but it wasn't enough to steal the round for Saraiva. Sherdog.com sees it 10-9 for Gurgel.

Round 2
Solid action in the second period. Both fighters land well on their feet, but it's Saraiva who lands the better leather. Gurgel is hurt with a right hand to the forehead and a left to the jaw. Saraiva pulls guard and works elbows to the top of his opponent's head. Gurgel's face starts to show signs of punishment. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Saraiva.

Round 3
Dominating final stanza from Jorge Gurgel. He lands a double jab and left hands throughout the first half of the round. Saraiva connects with a shot of his own before pulling guard. Gurgel rides the top position and offers some downward strikes for several minutes. Gurgel went to his feet with 15 seconds remaining but he was not able to secure a finish. Jorge Gurgel wins a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three judges' score cards.

Mike Nickels vs. Stephan Bonnar (Pictures)
Round 1
Nickels stuns Bonnar with a hard punch early in the bout. Bonnar attempts to recover while Nickels moves to the mount position. Bonnar bucks and takes Nickels back twice in the ensuing scramble. Nickels fights to avoid being choked but after readjusting position, Bonnar forces a tap from a rear naked choke at 2:14 of the first stage.

Heath Herring (Pictures) vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Pictures)
Round 1
Nogueira counters a low kick with a right hand before throwing Herring to the canvas. "Minotauro" works from side-control. Herring escapes to his feet and throws some sloppy punches. Nogueira lands a left and a right hand. Instead of looking for another takedown, the Brazilian looks content to counter strike with Herring. Nogueria scores with a left and a flying knee. "Minotauro" hits a stiff jab. Herring, now bleeding, lands a left kick to the body. Herring crushes Nogueira with a left kick to the head that lays him flat. Heath does not capitalize as he lets the dazed Brazilian back to his feet. The near-knockout blow steals the round for Herring, 10-9 on the Sherdog.com scorecard.

Round 2
A visibly wobbly Nogueira limps into the second round. Heath tries the same left kick to the head over and over but Nogueira has none of it. "Minotauro" looks as if he has recovered from the brutal shot he ate in the first frame. Nogueira scores with a takedown but Herring works back to his feet. The former PRIDE heavyweight champion snaps Herring's head back with a crisp left hand. The American now sports a large mouse under his left eye. Nogueira trips Herring to the mat and delievers some short punches before the horn sounds to end the round. 10-9 for Nogueira.

Round 3
Nogueira stalks Heath around the cage and takes the American to the floor at the four minute mark. "Minotauro" quickly takes his back and works for a rear naked choke. Herring does not allow the arm to sink under his chin. Herring reverses the position and invites Nogueira to stand. Herring is fatigued. 90 seconds remain in the contest. Nogueira presses forward and lands a knee to the body. He follows with a left knee to the chin. The final minute is all Nogueira. Sherdog.com scores the bout 29-28 for Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. All three judges agree, two rounds to one for "Minotauro."

Hermes Franca (Pictures) vs. Sean Sherk (Pictures)
Round 1
Franca lands a knee to the champions face in the opening seconds. Sherk picks Franca up to slam him, but the Brazilian latches on a guillotine choke. After a few tense moments, Sherk escapes the hold and mounts Franca. Franca pushses Sherk away and uses good leg work to get his guard back. Sherk now works from half-guard. The champion sends a few elbows downward. Sherk moves back to mount. One minute remains in the opening period. Franca slips out and goes for a leg but the American has none of it. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Sherk.

Round 2
Much like the opening seconds of the first, Franca drops Sherk with a knee and latches on a guillotine. Sherk fights it off and escapes to half-guard. Franca sweeps and takes the top position but it doesn't last long as Sherk kicks him off. Sherk back to half-guard. Now side-control. Franca reverses again and attempts another guillotine. The round ends before he can finish. 10-9 for Sherk.

Round 3
Sherk picks the Brazilian up and slams him to the canvas. Sherk works for a north-south choke but Franca gets back to guard. Sherk moves to his back and delivers some punches and knees to the body. Referee "Big" John McCarthy asks for more action as the crowd grows restless. Sherk attempts an Americana but Franca escapes. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for the champion.

Round 4
Franca delivers another knee before being ripped to the mat. Sherk works the top position from his opponent's closed-guard. Franca gets back to his feet but Sherk takes him down immediately. The American pounds away with punches from side-control. The pace slows to a crawl as both athletes show signs of fatigue. Sherk takes the fourth, 10-9.

Round 5
The start of the final frame sees Franca load up for another wild knee but Sherk sees it coming. The champion tackles Franca and lands a hard right elbow to his opponent's face. Sherk, after blocking a leg submission attempt from Hermes, moves to side-control. Hermes hangs tough but Sherk has dominated the duration of the 5-round bout. One minute remains in an action-free round. The crowd boos as time runs out. Sherdog.com sees it 50-45 for Sean Sherk. The official scores read 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46, all for Sean Sherk.

Rashad Evans (Pictures) vs. Tito Ortiz (Pictures)
Round 1
Ortiz fires a head kick and takes Evans down to the mat with a well executed double-leg. Rashad uses his back to walk up the cage and to his feet. Evans gets separation and unloads with his hands. Ortiz gets the best of the exchange and knocks Evans' mouthpiece out. Tito fights for underhooks against the cage. Ortiz scores with two hard low kicks. Ortiz shoots in but Evans sprawls and stuffs it. Evans turns and looks for a takedown of his own. Ortiz, now bleeding under his right eye, switches positions with Evans. Tito Ortiz takes the first frame, 10-9.

Round 2
Evans circles from a head kick and swings wildly. Evans fires a kick aimed towards Tito's head but Ortiz blocks it. Ortiz, with his back to the cage, lands two knees from the Thai-clinch. Evans answers with an elbow. A fatigued Evans lands a right hand and stops a double-leg attempt from Ortiz. Tito follows through and scores with a trip. Ortiz is warned for holding the fence. Ortiz grabs the cage again and a point is deducted. Tito is taken down but he locks in a guillotine. The round ends with Evans in danger from the hold. Sherdog.com sees it 9-9 after the point is taken from Ortiz.

Round 3
Tito Ortiz takes the fight to the canvas early in the final frame. He briefly achieves mount before Evans escapes to his feet. Ortiz fights for a high single-leg but Evans fights it off. The referee restarts the fight to the center of the octagon. Tito now appears to be very tied. Evans capitalizes with a shot punch combo. Evans drops levels for a takedown but Ortiz fights it off. Evans picks Ortiz up and slams him just as the fight ends. Sherdog.com sees it 10-9 for Evans, making the fight a draw, 28-28. The judges agree, 28-28 on all score cards.

Nathan Marquardt (Pictures) vs. Anderson Silva
Round 1
Marquardt scores with a left leg low kick. Anderson lands a right hand and explodes into a double jumping knee. Marquardt avoids it and takes the fight to floor with a single-leg. Silva tries an arm-triangle from the bottom. Marquardt lands shots to the body from his opponent's guard. Silva goes high with his guard but Marquardt backs out. Referee McCarthy restarts the action. Straight left from Silva finds its target. Marquardt shoots in but Silva stuffs it before taking Nathan to the mat. Standing above his opponent, Silva drops right-handed punches down until McCarthy halts the contest. Anderson Silva successfully defends his middleweight title at 4:50 of the first.

Alvin Robinson (Pictures) vs. Kenny Florian (Pictures)
Round 1
Robinson comes out throwing leather. Alvin throws Florian to the canvas with an arm toss. Florian works back to his feet and answers with a judo throw of his own. Robinson connects with a left hand that forces a cringe from Florian. Kenny trips Robinson to the mat. Florian unloads several right hands before moving to side-control. The Boston native achieves mount. He pounds away until Robinson taps from punishment. The official time is 4:30 of the opening stanza.
