UFC 86 'Jackson vs. Griffin' Play-by-Play

Sherdog.com reports from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas with live play-by-play of UFC 86, which is headlined by Quinton Jackson (Pictures) versus Forrest Griffin (Pictures).

Corey Hill vs. Justin Buchholz (Pictures)

Both guys look pretty focused. The arena at this point is maybe a quarter full and outside the venue there is very little energy and electricity from the fans.

Round 1
Two hard right hands from Hill seconds in. Hill is very aggressive and Buchholtz is on the defensive. During a flurry, Hill trips Buchholz. They're up. Very fast pace. Hill is swarming him relentlessly. Two hard leg kicks from Buchholz. Buchholz leaps and pulls guard but hill scrambles back up. Two right knees from Hill in clinch and Buchholtz staggers. Buchholz is faking and misses a huge overhand right. Hill blocks a body kick and shoves Buchholtz to the ground at bell. 10-9 Hill.

Round 2
They come right out and pick up where they left off. Hill aggressive again. Buchholz starting to figure him out. Good kick to hills body. Buchholz lands a massive right head kick and they go toe to toe. Buchholz leaps and pulls guard again tries a gogoplata. Hill defends well. Hill slips past and mounts him. Buchholz is able to escape but hill scrambles. Buchholz snatches his back and locks in a rear-naked choke. Hill has no choice but to tap out. Official time is 3:57 of the second.

Melvin Guillard (Pictures) vs. Dennis Siver (Pictures)

Siver rushes out to the Octagon and is jumping up and down like a vintage Kevin Randleman. Guillard slowly walks down with shades but he looks focused. Crowd boos Guillard and referee Herb Dean during the introductions.

Round 1
Guillard storms out and drops Siver with a right hand. Guillard tries to finish him but gets stuck in an armbar. Guillard escapes and backs away to let Siver up. Guillard rushes in again and flattens Siver with punches. Dean has to stop it. TKO at the 0:36 mark for Guillard. Siver finally gets up after a minute on the ground.

Jorge Gurgel (Pictures) vs. Cole Miller (Pictures)
Round 1
Gurgel lands a hard leg kick. Miller copies. Good head kick by Gurgel but Miller blocked most of it. Hard right hand by Miller. Gurgel having a hard time with Cole's reach. Two hard right hands by Miller. Miller in total control. Gurgel rocks Miller with a right cross during an exchange. Gurgel rushes in to finish. Miller is able to defend the onslaught and clear his head. Miller lands another decent right hand but Gurgel fires back with a combo. Very close round. 10-9 Gurgel.

Round 2
Miller pressing the action. Gurgel is landing hard leg kicks almost at will. Both fighters are a bit tentative. Miller shoots in and scores a slick double leg takedown. Miller unloads a furious onslaught of punches. Gurgel is hurt by the punches but holds on. Miller steps to half guard. Miller can't pass to full mount. Gurgel scrambles but falls into a guillotine. Gurgel escapes and is now in Miller's guard. They get back up and Gurgel scores a takedown from the clinch. 10-9 Miller.

Round 3
Both seem desperate early. Miller tries a wizzer but Gurgel stuffs it on the way down. Good combo by Gurgel which leads to a slam from clinch in favor of Gurgel. Miller scrambles back to his feet. Gurgel slams him down again. Nothing becomes of the takedown and Gurgel backs away. They're both up. Gurgel is tired but trips miller. Miller tries an armbar but it's not deep. Gurgel escapes. During another scramble miller locks on a tight triangle. Gurgel defends well bud he can't break free. Miller rolls him over and tightens his grip. Gurgel taps out! Great fight. Official time is 4:48 of the third.

Gabriel Gonzaga (Pictures) vs. Justin McCully (Pictures)
Round 1
Mccully is dropped by a leg kick. Gonzaga rushes down to side-control. Gonzaga seizes his back during a scramble but McCully rolls over. Gonzaga moves from half-guard to full-guard. Gonzaga quickly applies a kimura. McCully taps out. Official time is just 1:57 of the first.

Tyson Griffin vs. Marcus Aurelio
Round 1
Griffin drops down and lands a straight right to the body. Just 45 seconds into the contest, the crowd starts to boo the slow start. Griffin is loading up on his punches but is missing way short of his target. Griffin pushes Aurelio to the mat and stands over his opponent throwing right hands. Griffin tries to avoid the Brazilian's guard but he has no choice after Aurelio locks up the left wrist of Griffin. Tyson pulls free and lands a few hard punches before standing to his feet. At the four minute mark, Griffin landed a crisp right to the midsection and a snapping low kick. Another solid body shot scores for Griffin. Aurelio tries to close the distance in search of a single but Griffin stuffs it.

Round 2
Back to the gut goes Griffin with three hard rights in the first 45 seconds of round two. He continues to strike the body to set up a head shot, but has not been able to time a solid chin strike yet. Aurelio shoots a lazy single that is defended easily. Griffin clinches his opponent against the fencing while stomping down on the left foot of Aurelio. Griffin snatches up a leg and slams Aurelio to the canvas. The Brazilian briefly took Griffin's back, but Tyson was able to take the top position. Aurelio went high with his hips in search of a triangle. Griffin postured up and escaped easily.

Round 3
Griffin kicks off the final period with a low kick and a glancing right hook. A digging left uppercut to the liver scores for Griffin. A left hook counter follows from the Xtreme Couture lightweight. Aurelio drops to his knees for a slow single-leg attempt. Griffin sprawls and roughs him up with two left hooks and a right straight. Griffin is dominating with his hands. He mixes is decent footwork and a low kick that buckles Aurelio's left knee. Griffin easily takes Aurelio down with a fast single. Aurelio attacks the left arm of Griffin with an armbar that is blocked. Aurelio switches to the right arm after Griffin pulls free. Time expires with Aurelio sporting damage on the right side of his face in the form of swelling and some blood.

All three official judges agree with scores of 30-27.

Josh Koscheck (Pictures) vs. Chris Lytle (Pictures)
Round 1
An extremely slow opening two minutes unfolds with both fighters starting cautious. Koscheck gets a takedown to break the stalemate but is caught in a guillotine choke from Lytle's half-guard. Koscheck frees his neck and hits the right side of Lytle's midsection with left hands. Lytle is controlling the positioning by locking up Koscheck's head. Koscheck nearly hops straight to mount while Lytle attempted to work from butterfly-guard. Lytle got back to guard and ate a powerful right hammer fist at the sound of the bell.

Round 2
Koscheck scores a single-leg but again is caught in a guillotine from half-guard. He forces his head loose and begins to tee off with punches and elbows. Lytle is cut above his right eye. Koscheck is starting to dominate with left and right hooks from his opponent's half-guard. Lytle is trapped on his back against the cage, eating leather. Lytle goes for a heel hook but Koscheck has none of it. Lytle is bleeding horribly from two cuts abobve his right eye. Puddles of blood abound.

Round 3
The cuts over Lytle's eye continue to drip blood. Koscheck looks to start the final frame where he left off, as he gets a takedown on his second shot. Elbows open the cuts wider as referee Yves Lavigne watches on closely, but perhaps not close enough. Lavigne stands the fighters up. Lytle cracks Koscheck with a flurry of punches but it is too little, far too late.

The official judges score the contest 30-26, 29-27, and 30-28 all for Josh Koscheck.

Joe Stevenson vs. Gleison Tibau (Pictures)
Round 1
The fighters exchange leather in the center of the Octagon. Stevenson lands a right hand that knocks Tibau off balance. Stevenon pulls guard with a guillotine that is defended. Stevenson stands and picks Tibau up with a double-leg before depositing him on the canvas. Tibau transitions into a deep omaplata. Stevenson is caught deep in the hold but he does not seem to be in danger. He relaxes and asks referee Steve Mazzagatti to stand them up to no avail. The round ends with Stevenson still stuck in the omaplata.

Round 2
Stevenson ducks his head and rushes forward for a double. Tibau, with his back to the cage, stuffs it and puts Joe against the fence. Tibau misses with a flurry of punches but gets a takedown. Tibau smoothly moves to side-control and mount shortly after. He loses the position as he steps over. Stevenson gets to his feet and pulls guard with an arm-in guillotine. Tibau taps quickly at 2:57 of the second.

Patrick Cote (Pictures) vs. Ricardo Almeida (Pictures)
Round 1
Almeida clinches and attempts to pull guard with a guillotine. Cote escapes but finds himself in the Brazilian's guard. The fighters stand and Cote stuffs an Almeida shot. Almeida ties up with the Canadian against the fence. He drops levels to look for a single-leg but Cote is game. Almeida switches to a double and it's successful. From half-guard, Almeida tries to pass. Cote shows good legwork in stopping Almeida from advancing. Almeida stands up in Cote's guard and lands three lefts to the head. He sits back in Cote's guard but doesn't stay long. He stands over his opponent and clearly takes the round with serviceable ground-and-pound.

Round 2
A long break period between rounds unfolds to repair a torn glove on Almeida. The Brazilian is stuffed on a takedown but he manages to pull guard. Cote escapes high hip movement from Almeida to stand. Little action follows as Cote stays patient, careful not to be taken down. Almeida gets an under-hook but he is unable to trip his opponent to the floor. Almeida tries to pull guard but is unsuccessful. The crowd showers the Octagon with boos as the action slows to a crawl. Almeida again tries to pull guard with a guillotine. Cote belts Almeida with a right hand just before the horn sounds.

Round 3
Cote comes out boxing with a jab and footwork. A fatigued-looking Almeida does little in return as he is hit with a right hand and a low kick. Almeida lands his best combination of the fight, a one two straight down the pipe. With 35 seconds remaining, Almeida scores a much-needed takedown. He moves to side-control and attempts a choke but time expires.

The official judges score the bout 29-28 (Cote), 29-28 Almeida and 29-28 for the winner by split-decision, Patrick Cote.

Quinton Jackson (Pictures) Vs. Forrest Griffin (Pictures)
Round 1
The fighters trade punches at the sound of the bell with nothing connecting solid. Griffin gets the action started with a right hand lead that lands. Griffin is working the lead leg of Jackson early with low kicks. A left hook from the champion finds its target. Griffin jabs with his left and goes back to Jackson's leg with a kick. A punching flurry punctuated by powerful left staggers Griffin. The challenger comes forward however, glancing a right straight and a low kick. A right uppercut counter collapsesGriffin to the canvas. Rampage enters Griffin's guard and moves him to the cage. Right hands land for Jackson as Forrest stood. Excellent opening frame.

Round 2
Griffin lands a low kick that hurts Jackson. His knee buckles as he retreats to the fencing. Griffin locks on a guillotine and trips Jackson to the canvas. He gives up the hold but takes top position. The challenger moves to side-control and works for an Americana. He gives up the submission to take the mount. Elbows and left hands land for Griffin. Forrest continues to elbow the head but he is doing little damage. All Griffin in the second frame.

Round 3
Griffin continues his assault on Jackson's left leg. Jackson is avoiding the majority of the incoming low kicks, but a few are getting through. Jackson, limping badly, is looking for a knockout punch. He hurts Griffin with a right hand but is now too slow to follow through. Griffin plays it smart by sticking and moving. Jackson tries to rally late in the round with a combination started with a right hook to the body. Griffin takes a bit of punishment but moves away.

Round 4
Jackson gets a takedown but is caught in a triangle. Griffin has the hold secured but he can't control Jackson's trapped arm. Jackson escapes but finds himself fighting an omaplata. The champion stands and lands a hard right hand on the now bleeding challenger. Forrest, dripping crimson fluid below his right eye, gets hit with a strong left right as the round closed.

Round 5
The fifth and final round starts with both fighters looking for a big punch. Griffin gets the best of early action with a right straight. Griffin goes back to the leg with a kick after tasting a right hook. Jackson turns it up a bit with a strong flurry. In the bout's final minute, Griffin went to the leg while Jackson loaded up with shots. Jackson was unable to connect as the close fight came to a close.
