UFC Featherweight Contender Alexander Volkanovski Hospitalized with Blood Infection

Alexander Volkanovski has had a hectic 72 hours, to say the least.

The Australian beat Jose Aldo at UFC 237 on Saturday by unanimous decision to become the top contender at featherweight. Then, on Tuesday evening it was reported that Frankie Edgar was getting a title shot against Max Holloway at UFC 240 instead of Volkanovski.

To make matters worse, as Volkanovski was on his way back from Rio de Janeiro, the 30-year-old complained about feeling sick along with sore feet and redness on his left foot. As his plane landed in Chile, the Australian felt worse and was taken to the hospital with a blood infection that ‘developed quickly.’

ESPN.com was first to report the news, which was later confirmed by Volkanovski’s manager, Rhys Dal Cin, on Twitter

“Hey all, Alex is ok. He is being treated for an infection that developed quickly while on our flight home,” Dal Cin wrote. “We are currently in Chile and will provide updates as they come to hand. The medical staff have been fantastic, he’s in good hands, and Alex is in good spirits.”

As of now, there is no word on when Volkanovski will be released from the hospital.
