UFC Fight Night 24 Bonuses: ‘Zombie,’ Hendricks Pocket $55K
Sherdog.com Staff Mar 26, 2011
Chan
Sung Jung (Pictured), Johny
Hendricks, Michael
McDonald and Edwin
Figueroa each took home an extra $55,000 for their work at
UFC Fight
Night 24 on Saturday night.
Featherweight fan-favorite Jung earned “Submission of the Night” for his second-round finish of Leonard Garcia; Hendricks took “Knockout of the Night” with a first-round stoppage of Anthony Waldburger; and McDonald and Figueroa shared “Fight of the Night” honors for their three-round thriller inside Seattle’s KeyArena.
Jung’s bonus was all but guaranteed after he forced Garcia to tap
out to the first twister submission in UFC history. Through
one-and-a-half rounds, the “Korean Zombie” and the “Bad Boy”
remained neck-and-neck, slinging leather just as they had in their
initial April 2010 meeting. After Garcia slipped on a kick late in
the second, however, Jung seized his opportunity. Taking Garcia’s
back, Jung first hunted for a rear-naked choke and then switched to
the neck crank maneuver. Garcia surrendered at 4:59 of the second
round, with only one second left on the clock.
“I’ve been watching Eddie Bravo’s videos on YouTube for a long time,” Jung said in his post-fight interview. “I kept saying in practice at Korean Top Team that I was going to do the twister in the UFC someday.”
Hendricks got back on track following the first defeat of his career, halting Waldburger just 95 seconds into their welterweight bout. A vicious left hand from former Oklahoma State wrestling standout Hendricks collapsed the Texan, forcing referee Mario Yamasaki into action.
Bantamweights McDonald and Figueroa stole the show with their Facebook-streamed preliminary contest, which saw “Mayday” throw myriad submission attempts at Figueroa in what was both men’s Octagon debut. Figueroa slipped free of rear-naked chokes, triangles and armbars from the 20-year-old prospect, but in the end, McDonald’s takedowns and impressive ground work was enough to earn him a unanimous nod.
