UFC Fight Night 40 Weigh-in Results: ‘Minotauro’ Nogueira-Roy Nelson Headliner Green-Lit
The
Ultimate Fighting Championship has chosen two long-tenured
heavyweights to carry its torch back to the Middle East.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira tipped the scales at 238 pounds for his UFC Fight Night 40 main event with Roy Nelson (255.5) on Friday at du Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Featherweight co-headliners Clay Guida (146) and Tatsuya Kawajiri (145) also met their contracted weight requirements without issue at Thursday’s official weigh-in.
A former
Pride Fighting Championships titleholder, Nogueira has little
left to accomplish in MMA. The beloved 37-year-old Brazilian last
competed at UFC on Fuel TV 10 in June, when he submitted to a
Fabricio
Werdum armbar at Paulo Sarasate Gymnasium in Fortaleza, Brazil.
Nogueira wields one of the sport’s most respected resumes, with
victories over onetime two-division Pride boss Dan
Henderson, 2006 Pride open weight grand prix winner Mirko
Filipovic and four-time K-1 World Grand Prix winner Semmy Schilt.
He has also beaten five former UFC champions: Mark Coleman,
Ricco
Rodriguez, Josh Barnett,
Tim
Sylvia and Randy
Couture. Nogueira has a compiled a 5-4 mark since arriving in
the UFC in July 2007.
Nelson will enter the cage on the heels of back-to-back losses to Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier. The 37-year-old last appeared at UFC 166 in October, when he dropped a one-sided unanimous decision to the aforementioned Cormier at the Toyota Center in Houston. A former International Fight League champion and winner of “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 10, Nelson has secured more than half (12) of his 19 career victories by knockout or technical knockout. He owns a 6-5 record inside the Octagon.
UFC Fight Night 40 “Nogueira vs. Nelson” -- which streams to UFC Fight Pass at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT -- will also feature a welterweight clash pitting the unbeaten Ryan LaFlare (171) against John Howard (171) and a lightweight scrap pairing “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 13 finalist Ramsey Nijem (156) with the undefeated Beneil Dariush (155).
