A trio of veterans took home some extra spending money in Germany for their performances inside the Octagon on Saturday. UFC Fight Night “Arlovski vs. Barnett” (online betting) was held at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg and the main event between Josh Barnett and Andrei Arlovski was a memorable one.
Barnett survived a wild opening round that saw him clipped by a series of right hands from Arlovski to slowly break the Belarusian down. After “The Warmaster” scored a takedown in the third and applied all sorts of pressure, he forced “The Pitbull” to roll over and give up his back. Several punches followed and from there, Barnett latched on a textbook rear-naked choke, ending the duel of former UFC heavyweight champions.
The thrilling win for Barnett capped off the event and it was clearly the highlight bout of the event. Both men pocketed an additional $50K for the battle, which was declared by the UFC as the “Fight of the Night.” Barnett’s endurance and eventual submission – he became the first man to ever submit Arlovski in MMA – earned him another $50K for a “Performance of the Night” bonus.
The other $50K POTN bonus went to perennial light heavyweight contender Ryan Bader. “Darth” survived a scare late in the first but came back in the second and knocked Ilir Latifi out cold with a knee to the face. Latifi changed levels for a takedown and when he shot it, Bader slammed the knee into the face, knocking him completely out.
