Not only does Eddie Alvarez have another belt to add to his collection, but he is also $50,000 richer following his title-winning victory over Rafael dos Anjos in the UFC Fight Night headliner on Thursday night.
Alvarez captured a “Performance of the Night” bonus for his first-round stoppage of dos Anjos at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. A right hook had the Brazilian on wobbly legs early and from there, Alvarez swarmed, eventually earning the finish on a defenseless dos Anjos 3:49 into the period.
Meanwhile, Alan Jouban and Belal Muhammad received “Fight of the Night” and $50,000 apiece for their back-and-forth welterweight scrap. Jouban dropped his foe three times in the opening two rounds but Muhammad was able to hang around and mount a furious third-round rally. It wasn’t quite enough, however, as Jouban emerged with a narrow unanimous verdict.
Finally, Pedro Munhoz rallied to submit Russell Doane in their bantamweight bout to earn the card’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award. Doane got off to a quick start, rocking his opponent with punching combos and knees. Munhoz survived the assault and was able to secure a guillotine choke 2:08 into the opening frame.
