Neil Magny and Kelvin Gastelum stole the show at UFC Fight Night in Monterrey on Saturday, and both welterweights were compensated for their efforts.
Magny and Gastelum each pocketed $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonuses for their five-round clash in the evening’s headliner at Monterrey Arena. Magny raced out to an early lead, as he outstruck Gastelum from distance and outmaneuvered his foe on the mat for the better part of the first three rounds. However, Gastelum staged a furious rally, knocking Magny down twice in round four and controlling most of round five to end the contest with momentum on his side. It was not enough, however, as Magny emerged with a split decision.
Elsewhere, Andre Fili captured a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for a first-round knockout of Gabriel Benitez in a preliminary featherweight clash. The Team Alpha Male product blasted his Mexican adversary with a head kick near the fence and then finished the job with follow-up punches 3:13 into round one.
Finally, Polo Reyes garnered the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his sudden finish of Cesar Arzamendia in a lightweight duel. After being held in check for most of the first frame, Reyes floored Arzamendia with a left hook after breaking from the clinch and landed a few more hammerfists to end the bout at the 3:42 mark of the period.
