Bruno Rodrigues vs. Matheus Nicolau Pereira

Round 1

The former training partners spend the opening minute circling and trading leg kicks, then Nicolau opens up with a few nice left hooks and a body shot. Another counter left hook knocks Rodrigues sideways, and a few moments later, a right hook to the body and left hand upstairs. Nicolau has gotten the better of the all-standup exchange through the first two minutes. Midway through the opening round, another Nicolau left hook sends “Korea” to the canvas. Nicolau pounces and sets up in Rodrigues’ open guard, trying to smash through with elbows and punches. Nicolau stands, dodges an upkick and kneels down in Rodrigues’ guard. The next time Nicolau stands up, Rodrigues flips over and scrambles to his feet. Nicolau keeps him on the fence and drags him back to the ground inside the final minute, but Rodrigues easily reverses and stands after this one. Rodrigues tries a spinning kick, but it’s caught by Nicolau and converted to one last takedown before the horn.

Pereira hit an exotic finish on Rodrigues.
Rodrigues takes the center of the cage to start the second and keeps it for the opening minute, without much happening in the exchanges. Nicolau catches another kick and converts it to a takedown, then gets an illegal upkick to the face as he kneels in Rodrigues’ guard. Referee Eduardo Herdy pauses the action; Nicolau doesn’t seem too affected by the kick and recovers quickly. Rodrigues is reset on his back, but when time resumes, he throws up his legs, threatening with a submission to escape to his feet. Nicolau follows and walks after Rodrigues to land another left hook counter. “Korea” is on his back foot halfway through the round, landing sporadic leg kicks. A spinning kick to the chin and chest of Nicolau knocks him to the ground, and Rodrigues wastes no time jumping into his opponent’s guard. Nicolau tries an armbar, but “Korea” stands up and defends the far arm until Nicolau releases. One minute left now and Rodrigues peppers with short punches to the body as he works from Nicolau’s closed guard. Referee Herdy calls for action, but Rodrigues focuses on holding down Nicolau to the end of the round.

Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Rodrigues

Round 3

Rodrigues stays on his back foot at the start of round three, using leg kicks and body shots to keep the less active Nicolau out of range. A clinch knee from Rodrigues grazes Nicolau, who shoves him away and just misses with a right hook. Rodrigues tries a leaping knee but rushes into the pocket with his hands by his side and gets clobbered with an overhand right. Nicolau jumps on Rodrigues instantly, passes from side control to full mount and grinds on “Korea” with elbows and forearm shots. Rodrigues, now cut above his left eye, tries to kick away Nicolau and create some space, but Nicolau is staying heavy halfway through the round. Rodrigues tries to shrimp underneath and leaves his neck wide open for a choke; Nicolau applies a beautiful Japanese necktie and quickly forces the tap.

The Official Result

Matheus Nicolau Pereira def. Bruno Rodrigues via Submission (Japanese Necktie) R3 3:27

Pedro Munhoz vs. Jimmie Rivera

Round 1

Rivera connects with a short left hook and puts a series of kicks on the body of Munhoz, who’s forced to cover up in the opening minute as the American gets busy. An uppercut-left hook combo from Rivera lands before Munhoz puts an inside leg kick on Rivera’s cup. Referee Mario Yamasaki pauses the fight, Rivera takes a moment to recover and the bantamweights are back on. Rivera gets clipped with a leaping back kick, then gives Munhoz a leg kick and a body shot in return. More body work scores for Rivera as he continues to circle the outside and catch Munhoz with counters. The uppercut-left hook combo is humming for Rivera, who continues to outwork Munhoz inside the last two minutes of the round. Left hooks thump Munhoz’s body now. The “Young Punisher” tries to retaliate with a takedown but is stuffed by Rivera. With 20 seconds left, Munhoz steps in with a hard knee to Rivera’s left eye and then jumps guard with a guillotine. Rivera slips loose of the choke before the round ends.

Rivera earned a split decision.
Munhoz is a little more active to start the second, landing a few lead elbows and punches but still getting tagged by Rivera’s body shots. A right hook to the body and left upstairs send Munhoz slumping to the canvas, but he comes to his senses just as Rivera tries to pounce. The 135ers stand, and now it’s Munhoz’s turn to crack Rivera with a hard shot. Rivera stumbles a bit before regaining his footing and resuming his offensive output. Munhoz, sporting some swelling beneath his right eye, gets inside on a good takedown attempt but again is stuffed by Rivera. Out of nowhere, an overhand right finds the mark on Rivera’s chin and puts him on rubber legs. Munhoz snatches up a guillotine and jumps guard again, but Rivera quickly rolls out of it and back to his feet. Two minutes remain and the back-and-forth middle round still seems up for grabs. Rivera is starting to slow, absorbing more kicks to his lead leg and midsection. Munhoz shrugs off a left hand and gives Rivera a hard hook on the chops.

Round 3

Munhoz gets a jab on his swollen right eye and paws at it, then returns fire with a front kick to the jaw. Both men whiff on spinning kicks, drawing an “ooh” from the Sao Paulo crowd. The lead uppercut lands for Rivera, only now there’s no hook behind it. A high knee from Munhoz connects, but Rivera eats it and throws three or four punches in return. Munhoz hits a quick takedown near the fence; Rivera posts and stands instantly, then separates from Munhoz to resume swinging. Munhoz connects with a counter right over the top and tries to jab Rivera toward the fence. Rivera steps out to the center but soon has to retreat as Munhoz pops him with a jab and a straight. Down to the final 90 seconds, Rivera comes alive with a three-piece combo and a hard right hook behind it. Another big right hand comes after, then a cracking left hook. Referee Yamasaki pauses the action to replace Rivera’s missing mouthpiece, and they get back to it with under a minute to go. Munhoz slows down Rivera with a check left hook, then clocks him coming in with a left straight. Rivera tries a shot, gets stuffed but catches Munhoz with a right hook as they stand. Both men are swinging at the end, with Rivera’s right hand getting the better of the final exchange.

Viscardi Andrade vs. Gasan Umalatov

Round 1

There’s not much action to speak of in the opening 90 seconds as the welterweights circle and flick out leg kicks. Andrade catches a kick and lands a straight right which forces Umalatov to turn around and scamper away, drawing a huge cheer from the partisan crowd, though nothing comes of it. Andrade seems emboldened now, getting a little busier with leg kicks and stepping inside with a (slipped) punching combination. Two minutes left in the first frame and Umalatov has yet to do much offensively, still sliding backward, looking to counter. Andrade is leaving him few counter opportunities by throwing sparse strikes and striking from close range. Umalatov snuffs out a takedown attempt and clips Andrade with an overhand right on the cheek. Andrade lands a loud leg kick, circles away and shuts down another shot, sending Umalatov away with an elbow. Andrade clinches with Umalatov on the fence in the final minute, banging the body with a punch and an elbow.

Round 2

Umalatov is starting to get a little busier with his hands at the start of round two, but neither man is bringing any consistent offense. Andrade does some good work with counters and a long jab, and now he mixes in a body kick. Umalatov chases after his opponent to land an overhand right, then goes back to circling. Andrade flurries with a combination, another body shot. Umalatov tries to rush him against the fence for a clinch, gets kneed in the gut and backs out. Andrade makes him back up further with a sequence of high kicks, punches and a clinch knee. More knees rock Umalatov just before time expires.

Round 3

Andrade outpointed Umalatov.
Umalatov clips Andrade with a spinning heel kick to the jaw, then chases him down and tries to execute a throw. Andrade thwarts the toss, still looks hurt as he staggers backward but catches the incoming Umalatov with a clinch knee to the body which slows the Russian’s advance momentarily. Umalatov lands another spinning kick, this one to the ribs of Andrade, who takes the shot and resets in the center to land a slapping inside leg kick. Umalatov whiffs on a big overhand right, takes a left hook to the gut and then another. Busy footwork from Andrade is keeping him out of trouble as Umalatov looks for a big left hand to end this. Umalatov tries to clinch, can’t hold Andrade on the fence. The “Cobra” does manage to crack Andrade with a big left in the final seconds, but Andrade drops to guard and rests on the ground to end the fight while Umalatov attempts a cartwheel pass.

Edimilson Souza vs. Chas Skelly

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: G. Venga/Sherdog.com

Skelly weathered the storm.
Souza crouches low and tries to work his way inside to strike, but the wrestler Skelly changes levels when Souza goes upright and grabs one of the Brazilian’s legs. After a brief struggle on the fence, Skelly drags Souza out to the center of the cage and finally trips him to the ground, now 90 seconds into the bout. Skelly pushes down on Souza’s head and elbows him before standing to pass the guard to side control. Working from right to left across Souza’s body in the center of the cage, Skelly locks up a D’arce choke and squeezes tight. Souza tries to put his hips to the mat and flattens out until he’s able to slip his head free. Souza stands and invites Skelly to do the same. Once they’re up, Souza sends Skelly crashing to the mat with a lovely left hook on the end of a combo. Skelly regains his wits and rolls for a kneebar, forcing Souza to go on the defensive. Souza sits up against the fence and pops Skelly with a couple short left hands to the face. Skelly gives up the leg and stands, only to be backed up and clipped by another Souza left in the closing seconds.

Round 2

Skelly shoots straight for a takedown and gets stuffed to his back by Souza, who begins pounding away with big elbows until the American drops back to try a heel hook. Souza kneels next to Skelly and socks him with a couple hammerfists until the Brazilian is able to pull the leg clear and escape to his feet. Souza is finding a home for his left hand as Skelly begins to tire. Skelly is back on the takedown attempt, pushing Souza against the fence. From the rear, with one hook in, Skelly kicks off the fence and brings Souza to the ground with him. As soon as they hit the mat, Skelly locks up a tight rear-naked choke which has Souza tapping fast.

Clay Guida vs. Thiago Tavares

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: G. Venga/Sherdog.com

Tavares quickly tapped Guida.
Guida jabs his way toward Tavares and changes levels to floor the Brazilian with a quick double-leg, moving from the center of the cage to the fence. Tavares grabs a guillotine with his left arm as he’s slammed to the ground, then squeezes the choke as he holds Guida in his guard. Guida may be in trouble, as he’s unable to slip his head free, and now Tavares bucks him over the top, sweeping into full mount. Tavares keeps the choke locked on as he mounts Guida, forcing the “Carpenter” to tap out.

The Official Result

Thiago Tavares def. Clay Guida via Submission (Guillotine Choke) R1 0:39

Yan Cabral vs. Johnny Case

Round 1

Cabral opens with a leg kick and gets a harder one in return from Case, who sticks a left hand behind it and pushes away the Brazilian with a front kick. Case flicks out long jabs, keeping Cabral at range until the jiu-jitsu ace decides to shoot inside. Case is going to sprawl on the shot, so Cabral pulls half guard and looks for a submission underneath. Case doesn’t want to play on the ground, so he stands up and allows Cabral to do the same. Cabral changes levels to grab a single-leg, puts Case’s right leg over his shoulder and pushes him to the fence, but Case lands punches as he hops backward. Cabral completes the takedown, gets swept underneath and threatens with a heel hook, which he tries to convert into back-mount when Case kneels down to escape danger. Case puts his back on the mat, and now Cabral takes side control on the American’s right with two minutes to go in the opening round. Cabral moves to north-south position, then to cross side control on Case’s left, where Cabral begins hunting for a kimura. Case grabs hold of his own cup to defend the armlock; Cabral complains to referee Herb Dean, who tells Cabral that the move is perfectly legal. Cabral gives up on the kimura and Case bursts back to his feet, finishing the round with leg kicks and a body shot.

Round 2

Cabral lunges into the pocket with punches and gets picked of by Case’s right hand. Now it’s Case’s turn to come forward, although in a more measured fashion, inching his way toward Cabral and then ducking as they reach the fence and the Brazilian tries a spinning elbow. Cabral sticks a jab but takes a harder straight right down the center from Case, who follows with a hard body blow. A left cross grazes Cabral’s temple, sending the wobbly Nova Uniao fighter to the ground. Case stands over him and swings a few big punches, despite his corner telling Case to allow Cabral to stand up. Finally, with 2:20 on the clock, Case does just that, but Cabral seems to have regained his composure if not his stamina. Case backs him up with a body kick and lands a right hand behind it, and Cabral comes away from the exchange pointing at his left eye. Referee Dean tells the lightweights to fight on, and Case closes out the round with more pressure, leg kicks and long left hands.

Round 3

Case took two rounds from Cabral.
Cabral gets backed up to the fence with a left hook and long right from Case, but the Brazilian bounces off the cage and reverses his momentum, running at Case for a quick clinch. Up against the cage, Cabral drags Case to the ground and tries to take his back, but the fence blocks the pass and Case is able to jump back to his feet. Cabral won’t give up, wrapping up Case again and pulling him back to the mat. This time, Cabral is able to use an arm-triangle setup to slip around and take Case’s back, and now Cabral is where he wants to be with three minutes left to fight. Case is ignoring Cabral’s punches, playing two-on-one defense to fend off the rear-naked choke. The BJJ black belt secures back-mount with a body triangle and continues to hunt for the RNC. With 80 seconds left, Case is able to twist around and take top control, then escape an armbar attempt. Case tries to flatten out Cabral at the base of the fence, landing three or four hard punches to the face in the process. Cabral kicks off the fence and stands, eating more punches along the way but getting back to his feet before the final horn.

Gleison Tibau vs. Abel Trujillo

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: G. Venga/Sherdog.com

Tibau was awarded the submission.
Tibau shoots in the first half minute of the fight and completes a quick double-leg, but Trujillo is able to return to his feet within seconds. Tibau spins him down again, gets clear of a loose Trujillo guillotine attempt and passes to full mount. Trujillo gives up his back momentarily, then rolls over to surrender full mount again. Tibau catches him in the transition with a no-hooks rear-naked choke and tries to slip around to secure back-mount and the RNC. Referee Keith Peterson sees Trujillo with his eyes closed, believes the American has gone to sleep and stops the fight. Trujillo jumps up as soon as Tibau is off him, protesting the stoppage which was undoubtedly premature. Nonetheless, it seems the result will stand.

The Official Result

Gleison Tibau def. Abel Trujillo via Technical Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) R1 1:45

Fabio Maldonado vs. Corey Anderson

Round 1

Anderson pecks at Maldonado early with short left hooks and straight right hands. Maldonado covers up and holds the center of the cage, then flicks out a few jabs to the face and body to get Anderson’s attention. One minute in, Anderson ties up and takes Maldonado to the ground in the middle of the Octagon, then postures up in the Brazilian’s half guard to land a couple elbows, then some harder right hands. Maldonado tries to sweep and instead escapes out the back door to jump back to his feet. Anderson presses him against the fence with an underhook, now with two minutes left in the first. Maldonado eats a couple shots and tries a bit of rope-a-dope, leaning against the fence. Anderson backs up to the center, where Maldonado catches up and puts a left hook on the American’s body. A jab lands for Anderson, then another before he gets inside on a high single and puts Maldonado on the canvas. Maldonado rolls to his knees and covers up as Anderson spends the final 20 seconds throwing short left hands and a big knee to the ribs.

Anderson absorbs a few and drops down to grab a single-leg, switches to a double and plants Maldonado on his backside again. Maldonado stands quickly but is pressed on the fence by Anderson, who connects with short punches and elbows in the tie-up. Maldonado connects with a couple body shots, so Anderson goes for another takedown. Maldonado fends off the shot and circles back to the middle; Anderson follows and shoots a right hand down the middle, then lands a clinch knee. Another takedown goes for Anderson, this time in the center of the cage, and now he flattens out Maldonado on his back from half guard. Maldonado hips out and pushes back to his feet in the final 20 seconds of the round.

Anderson cruised past Maldonado.
Anderson grabs for a single-leg from way out and gets shoved away. He tries to pull a Thai clinch and pays for it with one of Maldonado’s trademark body shots. Ninety seconds in, Anderson changes levels and hits a takedown with ease, then follows Maldonado as he scoots over to the fence. Maldonado rolls to his knees, his right side flush to the cage, Anderson on his left side, throwing short punches. Maldonado powers back to his feet midway through the round; Anderson greets him with a big clinch knee and a right hook before digging an underhook to hold the Brazilian on the fence. Maldonado gets off a body shot and a right hand to separate, but Anderson grabs hold of him right away and puts him back on the cage. The light heavies disengage and move back to the center with 90 seconds left. Anderson zaps Maldonado with a straight right hand, walks him back to the fence and tags him with a short right before releasing. With 25 seconds left, Anderson hits what should be his final takedown on an exhausted Maldonado and rides out the last half minute in half guard.

Gilbert Burns vs. Rashid Magomedov

Round 1

Burns closes the distance with a body kick but leaves his hands down and gets swept out of the pocket by a Magomedov left hand. “Durinho” lunges inside again with a punch, wraps up Magomedov and easily trips him to the mat near the base of the fence. Magomedov takes a knee and puts his back against the fence, trying to block Burns, who’s looking to sneak around and take the back. Burns rips him off the cage and back to the ground, but again Magomedov is able to stand and put his back on the fence. Midway through the round now, the lightweights separate and return to the middle to strike. Magomedov puts a kick on Burns’ body, then another. Burns answers with a leg kick as he tries to close in on Magomedov near the fence. Magomedov sends a right hand over the top and lands a hard leg kick to back Burns out of range. Burns is whiffing repeatedly with big overhand rights, allowing Magomedov to pivot underneath and counter without fear. Magomedov scores with another combo at the end of the round, with a body kick to finish it off.

Magomedov dominated Burns.
Magomedov checks a punch and puts a kick in Burns’ breadbasket, then counters over top of the jiu-jitsu ace’s next combination. The Russian is controlling the center, walking Burns around the outside and flashing snappy kicks. Burns ducks low and drives into a single-leg, but he’s only able to wrap up Magomedov and push him against the fence. Burns tries pulling guard and winds up eating a hard left hand from Magomedov before the “Highlander” backs away. Burns stands and is greeted by a right hook on the temple which unsteadies his legs. Magomedov smells blood but takes his time closing in on Burns, eventually dropping him to his seat with another right hand. Referee Keith Peterson is taking a close look as Magomedov pounds on the grounded Burns, but the stoppage doesn’t materialize. Magomedov allows Burns to stand and comes over the top with another right hand that backs up the Brazilian to the fence. One minute left in the middle round, Magomedov has a right high kick deflected. Burns has cleared the cobwebs but looks to be just surviving this round as Magomedov walks him down with low kicks and more punches.

Magomedov lands a couple shots on the ground before backing off, wanting no part of Burns’ guard. Kicks to the chest and legs keep Burns out of the pocket as Magomedov continues to have his way striking from range. Halfway through the period, Burns changes levels and then comes back up to dig an underhook and push Magomedov to the fence. Magomedov reverses and takes the outside position; Burns draws a deep breath and looks up to the clock. The lightweights break and get back to striking with the last 90 seconds ticking down. Magomedov keeps Burns backing up with body kicks and long punches, at one point getting the Brazilian to bite and cover up on a feint. Burns pulls the Thai clinch in the last 20 seconds and puts a hard knee on Magomedov’s jaw, but it looks like too little, too late, as this one will go to the judges’ scorecards.

Alex Oliveira vs. Piotr Hallmann

Round 1

Oliveira gets off to a good start with a front kick that clips Hallmann’s face and a trio of clinch uppercuts. Something in the flurry busts Hallmann’s nose, which is bleeding as the Polish fighter tries to close the distance on the taller man. “Cowboy” comes across the middle with a nice right hand and follows with a left hook. Hallmann tries a takedown, gets nothing and comes away with a reddened face. Oliveira pins Hallmann against the cage with three minutes to go in the opening frame. The action slows here, with Oliveira landing the occasional shot while working to keep Hallmann on the cage. With 90 seconds left, Oliveira tries a double-leg takedown, but Hallmann defends to stay standing. Oliveira makes him pay with a knee to the gut and then releases to tee up Hallmann’s face for a right cross. Hallmann grabs the Thai clinch but pulls up short with a knee. A leg kick takes Hallmann off balance and Oliveira follows with a pinpoint uppercut on a moving target. A few more uppercuts from Oliveira end the round.

Oliveira smoked Hallmann.
Hallmann tries to grab the Thai plum but he can’t land any strikes from the position against the longer Oliveira. The Brazilian strings together four or five more good punches before he’s wrapped up and tripped to the ground. Hallmann works from Oliveira’s open guard with four minutes remaining, burying his face in the grounded fighter’s chest to throw no-look punches. Oliveira throws up a triangle, can’t get it, and now closes his guard around Hallmann. As they fight away from the fence, Hallmann giftwraps Oliveira’s arm behind his back, but he’s barely able to work from the position before referee Mario Yamasaki orders the fighters to stand. Oliveira catches Hallmann kicking and chops out his planted leg, then tries to jump on the submission specialist’s back. Hallmann slips out the back door and passes to north-south position with 90 seconds left to fight. Oliveira reclaims half guard but can’t get out from under Hallmann, who slams the Brazilian with a few good elbows toward the end of the round.

Thomas Almeida vs. Anthony Birchak

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: G. Venga/Sherdog.com

Almeida impressively melted Birchak .
Birchak switches stances in front of Almeida and lands a few leg kicks before trying to get hold of the Brazilian. “Thominhas” slides backward, still waiting, not really letting his hands go here in the opening minute. Almeida finds an opening with Birchak comes charging forward and lands a left hand. Birchak answers with a head kick and two or three hard punches as he fights Almeida on the fence. Almeida circles out to the center and sends Birchak sideways with an overhand right on the cheek. Almeida tries to hit the switch on a Birchak takedown attempt, but Birchak sprawls and puts Almeida on his back. The Brazilian grabs a headlock from underneath and uses it to scramble back to his feet. Halfway through the opening round, Birchak lunges forward with a body-head combo followed by a head kick, but Almeida dodges it all. Almeida lands an uppercut, a left hook upstairs, then fends off a takedown attempt by backing up to the fence. Birchak avoids a Thai clinch and socks Almeida with a right hand on his way out of the pocket. Almeida chases him down to land a right hook, then a left hand sends the American tilting sideways. A left cross puts Birchak on unsteady legs near the fence, where Almeida blows him up with a vicious right hand on the jaw. Birchak never sees it coming and goes limp as soon as the punch connects, his legs giving way as he crumbles in a heap against the fence. The crowd goes wild for the hometown favorite as Thomas Almeida records another highlight reel knockout.

Glover Teixeira vs. Patrick Cummins

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: G. Venga/Sherdog.com

Teixeira teed off on Cummins.
Cummins sticks a few jabs, shoots low and double-legs Teixeira to the ground. The Brazilian goes belly down, gets to his knees and stands up to circle back to the middle of the cage. Cummins hits another takedown and dodges a second Teixeira guillotine attempt by passing to side control. Again, Teixeira is able to stand almost instantly, and now he begins to split the gloves of Cummins with hard, straight rights. Vitor Belfort vs. Dan Henderson

Round 1

Referee Mario Yamasaki is the third man in the cage for tonight’s 205-pound main event, with judges Guilherme Bravo, Derek Cleary and Otto Torriero scoring at cageside. Henderson opens with a pair of hard kicks to the inside of southpaw Belfort’s lead leg, but there’s no other action in the tense first minute. Another 60 seconds pass without incident aside from a few more “Hendo” leg kicks. Suddenly, Belfort wheels up with a left high kick that catches Henderson on the side of the head and a huge left hand behind it. The American is in a daze, grabbing for Belfort as he’s pushed to the ground. Belfort polishes off Henderson with three more lefts on the ground and referee Yamasaki has seen enough.
