It was a tale of two rounds in the UFC Fight Night Brisbane co-main event, but ultimately it was Neil Magny who had more gas in the tank.
Magny earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his wild welterweight showdown against Hector Lombard on Saturday night, a contest that featured a pair of huge momentum swings. Lombard had Magny on the brink of defeat in round one, knocking his foe down and swarming for the finish. The Colorado-based fighter survived, and Lombard faded badly, as Magny battered “Showeather” for the duration of round two before mercifully putting his exhausted foe away 46 seconds into the final stanza.
Meanwhile, Mark Hunt earned the evening’s other $50,000 performance award for a walk-off knockout of Frank Mir in the heavyweight headliner. With Mir unable to take the “Super Samoan” down, Hunt found an opening to floor the former heavyweight king with a right hand behind the ear. Hunt knew his work was done, and the contest was waved off at the 3:01 mark of the opening frame.
Finally, prospects Jake Matthews and Johnny Case earned “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their entertaining lightweight duel. It was Matthews who gradually asserted himself with damaging attacks to the body in the second and third rounds before submitting his foe with a rear-naked choke 4:45 into the final period.
