On Thursday, subscribers to UFC Fight Pass will be treated to an entire event as UFC Fight Night “Dos Anjos vs. Alvarez”will invade fight fans’ computers and tablets for roughly six hours. The fistic festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT and will culminate with the lightweight championship as Rafael dos Anjos will look to defend his crown against Eddie Alvarez. The hallowed MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas will serve as the event’s host locale.
Dos Anjos, who is coming off a broken foot that sidelined him for his scheduled title defense against Conor McGregor at UFC 196, first won the 155-pound belt when he toppled Anthony Pettis over five rounds for a unanimous decision. He defended his strap in spectacular fashion when he pummeled Donald Cerrone with a liver kick and follow-up punches in just 66 seconds and is looking to continue his five-fight winning streak against Alvarez.
The Philadelphian, meanwhile, is a two-time Bellator lightweight champion and his two brawls with Michael Chandler rank among the greatest in recent MMA history. He dropped his UFC debut to Cerrone, but Alvarez rebounded with two huge wins over Gilbert Melendez and Pettis, which led him to Thursday night, where he can become the first fighter in history to capture a world title in both Bellator and UFC.
At Wednesday’s weigh-in, both the champion and the challenger came in right on the money, greenlighting their anticipated showdown. Alvarez was the first to the scale and the Blackzilians rep nailed it; he clocked in at 155 pounds. The Brazilian, meanwhile, was equally on point as “RDA” officially weighed 155, setting the stage for what could be a fight of the year contender.
The co-feature will see fan favorite heavyweight Roy Nelson taking on new rival Derrick Lewis. “Country” checked in at 263 pounds while Lewis tipped the scale at 262.5.
