Wilson Reis vs. Joby Sanchez

Round 1

Reis takes the center of the cage, switching between southpaw and orthodox stances as he follows Sanchez, who’s cutting busy angles around the outside. Reis lands a leg kick, tries to step inside on the taller man and gets a jab flashed in his face. The pattern continues as the flyweights trade leg kicks, and now Reis connects with a short right uppercut when Sanchez ducks into the pocket with his head down. Sanchez gets one back with a stiff right straight and follows with an outside leg kick. Reis changes levels behind a left hand, hooks Sanchez’s leg and dumps him to the ground. The Brazilian fails to secure back mount on the first try, so he flattens Sanchez, takes mount and then moves to the back when Sanchez turns over. Sanchez stands and rides out the final 20 seconds of the round with Reis attached to his back.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Reis
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Reis
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Reis

Round 2

Sanchez tries to corner Reis near the fence and gets slugged back out with a left hook. The Jackson-Wink MMA product responds by dropping Reis with a left hand a few seconds later, but Reis scrambles back to his feet. A high kick from Sanchez sends Reis crashing back to the mat, and again Reis recovers and regains his footing. After holding Sanchez against the fence for a few seconds with a takedown attempt, Reis appears to have regained his wits. Two minutes into the round, Reis shoots again and plants Sanchez on the ground with a high double-leg. Sanchez bounces back up immediately and is held on the cage until Reis can drag him down again. This time, Reis jumps straight to back mount and remains there with hook in as Sanchez stands up. Sanchez shakes him off with two minutes on the clock. The flyweights clash heads as Sanchez rushes into the pocket and then lands a looping left hand. Reis brings the fight back to the fence with another clinch, pulls Sanchez back to the mat and looks for another back mount as time runs out.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Sanchez
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Sanchez
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Sanchez

Round 3

Reis initiates another clinch on the fence, changes levels for a takedown and once again takes his position on Sanchez’s back. Sanchez stands and seems to be in good position to shake off Reis, who only has one hook secured, but the former EliteXC champ stays in place and pops Sanchez with punches, trying to set up a rear-naked choke. Reis gives up the position about two minutes into the round, digs in double underhooks and throws Sanchez back to the mat. This time, Sanchez thwarts the back-take attempt and resets on his feet before Reis can grabhold of him again. Reis catches Sanchez leaning with a right hand behind the ear. Sanchez comes forward swinging wide punches, misses and eats a left hand when Reis reverses the momentum. It’s another takedown for Reis with 90 seconds left in the bout. Reis tries a RNC with one hook in, but Sanchez gives referee Kevin Nix a thumbs-up. Sanchez rolls over with 40 seconds left to take top position, then backs out and invites Reis to stand. Sanchez presses forward but neither man lands anything significant in the final moments.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Reis (29-28 Reis)
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Reis (29-28 Reis)

Chris Heatherly vs. Ben Saunders

Round 1

The welterweights clash front kicks before Heatherly changes levels and floors Saunders with a double-leg. Saunders throws up a high guard and locks up a triangle, but the choke is loose and Heatherly is able to slip out. “Killa B” transitions to an omoplata on Heatherly’s left arm and cranks it hard behind the UFC newcomer’s back. Heatherly withstands the hold at first, then grimaces in pain and finally taps out.

The Official Result

Ben Saunders def. Chris Heatherly via Submission (Omoplata) R1 2:18

Matt Hobar vs. Aaron Phillips

Round 1

Phillips lands a leg kick, then slips throwing a punch and has to struggle to stay standing as Hobar pushes him against the cage. The bantamweights disengage and reset in the center, where Hobar gets in on a single-leg and spins Phillips to the ground. Phillips tries to push off and scramble up from underneath, but Hobar stays heavy on top. Phillips is getting the better of the ground fight, however, keeping busy off his back with punches and elbows. Hobar stands and comes back down to side control on Phillips’ left side, then passes to north-south position. Phillips spins around and puts Hobar back in his guard. Hobar stands to try and advance position and instead eats a pair of upkicks. A third upkick lands as Hobar drops down to side control, this time on Phillips’ right side. When Phillips moves to regain guard, Hobar stands again and is cracked with another upkick. Hobar stands over Phillips with 30 seconds left and takes yet another upkick before the round ends.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Hobar
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Hobar
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Hobar

Round 2

Phillips picks the ankle of Hobar near the fence and both men go to the ground, but Hobar slips around to take Phillips’ back as they stand. Phillips turns around and drills Hobar with a solid knee up the center, and now Hobar presses him against the fence to slow the pace. More knees score for Phillips before the 135ers separate. Hobar tells referee Kevin Nix that he took a knee to the groin in an exchange, but Nix tells him to fight on. Phillips is pushed against the fence but gets the better of the clinch with some hard knees and elbows. Quick takedown goes for Hobar in the middle of the cage, and he passes to side control, where he opens up a cut on the outside of Phillips’ left eye with some heavy elbow strikes.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Hobar
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Hobar
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Hobar

Round 3

Phillips surrenders an early takedown near the fence and works to secure an arm from underneath as Phillips leans left to right in cross-side control. Hobar grinds away with ground-and-pound, short elbows upstairs and knees to the body, and then follows as Phillips slowly works back to his feet. Just under two minutes remain in the fight as Phillips defends a single-leg with a wide sprawl against the fence. Hobar switches to a double and rips Phillips away from the fence for another takedown at the 90-second mark. Phillips is trying to get something going, throwing short punches with both hands from underneath, but Hobar smothers him as he stands and finishes the fight by cracking Phillips with a pair of knees and a left hook.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Hobar (30-27 Hobar)
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Hobar (30-27 Hobar)

Beneil Dariush vs. Tony Martin

Round 1

Martin strikes out from the center of the cage with a kick to the inside of southpaw Dariush’s lead leg. Martin lands another, but this time Dariush is waiting with a hard left-handed counter. Martin sticks Dariush with a straight right down the center, then another which bloodies the nose of the Kings MMA fighter. Dariush puts up a high guard as Martin comes around the outside with a pair of left hooks, then a straight right. Dariush is pulling up short with long, reaching punches but finding his range with some kicks to Martin’s body. Martin clinches up briefly to connect with an uppercut and then releases. Dariush returns the favor with a clinch behind a knee to the gut, but the lightweights soon fight off the fence. Dariush tries a double-leg against the fence, brings Martin to the mat and tries to jump on his back, but Martin turns around and stands to change the position and hold Dariush on the cage. Martin lands a combination near the fence, finishes with an uppercut. Dariush turns a clinch into a takedown just before the round ends.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Martin
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Martin
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Martin

Round 2

Dariush goes to the body of Martin with a kick, tries to leap into range with a knee and gets countered with a left. Martin uses a standing kimura to thwart a takedown attempt on the fence, then holds Dariush there with an underhook about 90 seconds into the round. The 155ers pummel for position, neither man mounting much offense until they work off the fence and Dariush scores with a knee to the body. Martin changes levels to try a double-leg on the fence, can’t get it and winds up leaning on Dariush until referee Dan Miragliotta separates them. Martin comes away from the tie-up with a cut around the outside corner of his right eye, and now Dariush hits a takedown to half guard. Dariush passes quickly to mount, frames up an arm-triangle and slides off to the side to bear down on the choke, forcing Martin to tap out.

The Official Result

Beneil Dariush def. Tony Martin via Submission (Arm-Triangle Choke) R2 3:38

Alex Garcia vs. Neil Magny

Round 1

Garcia catches a kick and shoves Magny backward against the fence but the Tristar Gym product misses with long, lunging punches. Magny gets hold of the smaller man and drags him to the ground, attempting to move to back control. Garcia grabs a knee and tries to take top position, thwarted by Magny, who also snuffs out a heel hook attempt. Magny leans across Garcia’s body from right to left in a deep half guard, throwing elbows at Garcia’s body and thigh while threatening with a far-side kimura. Magny stands over Garcia and kicks at his legs in the closing seconds of the round.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Magny
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Magny
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Magny

Round 2

Garcia steps gingerly around the outside on his back foot, wincing when he steps down on his right leg which he apparently injured in the opening round. Garcia tries to disguise the injury by flashing some high kicks, but they miss and he instead shoots for a takedown against the fence. Dragging Magny to the ground, Garcia sets up in the longer man’s open guard and swings punches over the top. Magny closes his guard and peppers with punches from underneath before abandoning the offense to tie up Garcia’s arms. Garcia stands and invites Magny back to his feet; Magny obliges and quickly clinches Garcia against the cage. The welterweights separate and Garcia starts whiffing with some long overhand rights. He clips Magny with one and changes levels behind it to try a takedown near the fence. They stall out in the clinch and separate to spend the last 20 seconds of the round feinting and weaving.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Garcia
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Garcia
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Garcia

Round 3

Garcia is cleared to continue by the cageside physician after a quick exam of his right knee between rounds. “The Dominican Nightmare” starts the round with a takedown to Magny’s closed guard, but it’s Magny keeping busy from underneath while Garcia buries his face. Referee John McCarthy calls for action, and Garcia postures up to throw a single right hand. Magny rolls to his knees, then stands up, but Garcia jumps on his back in the process. Garcia only has one hook secured, and that leg is being attacked by Magny with some sharp elbows to the thigh. Garcia drops off, changes levels for a double-leg against the fence and gets stood up. Magny grabs underhooks but gets reversed and doubled down to the canvas. Garica climbs on the standing Magny’s back again, still with only one hook in place, and he falls off with 40 seconds on the clock. Magny slams Garcia to the ground and circles away, then hits a takedown of his own to finish the fight.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Garcia (29-28 Garcia)

Skelly’s second attempt at a double-leg yields a takedown, and now Skelly jumps on the Finn’s back as they stand up. The featherweights tilt back to the ground and Skelly is nearly shaken out of back mount. Niinimaki finally frees himself about two minutes into the round and immediately pulls guard with a guillotine choke attempt. Skelly frees his head and jumps on Niinimaki’s back, securing one hook and applying a rear-naked choke which has Niinimaki tapping in short order.

The Official Result

Chas Skelly def. Tom Niinimaki via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) R1 2:35

Valmir Lazaro vs. James Vick

Round 1

The taller Vick flashes a few left high kicks which Lazaro slips away from. Lazaro’s first low kick is checked by Vick, who swings into range with a sweeping left hand. Lazaro connects with a leg kick, takes one back to the right side of his body. Vick takes a couple more kicks to his lead leg and a right straight down the center. Vick grazes with a left high kick, eats a left hook during a wild exchange in the center. Lazaro scores with a stiff jab, then hits Vick with a knee to the belly when the American tries to clinch. Both guys are scoring as they trade in the pocket, and now Vick is beginning to get the better of the exchange with long, straight rights. Lazaro changes levels for a take down with a 1:40 on the clock, but it’s quickly reversed by Vick. The lightweights come back to their feet and Vick gets his leg caught on Lazaro’s shoulder after a left high kick. Vick is taken down, stands up right away and goes after Lazaro’s body with punches. Lazaro comes forward looking for a takedown and has to avoid a guillotine. Vick eats a right straight to wade forward with five or six punches, most of which come up short as the round winds down.

TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Lazaro
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Vick

Round 2

Lazaro keeps up the pace early in round two, mixing up punches and body kicks when he gets into striking range of the taller man and then dipping out. Vick takes a low kick, lands another left high kick but again doesn’t connect flush. There’s lots of pocket striking in the middle of the round but not much clean offense from either man, though a winging right hand from Lazaro opens a small cut on the outside of Vick’s left eye. Vick shuts down a clinch attempt, tags Lazaro with a cracking right hand to the temple. Lazaro appears to be on rubber legs but may be playing it up to lure Vick into a firefight, as the Brazilian swings a big overhand right when Vick presses forward. Again, Lazaro wobbles after a Vick right hand, and now the lightweights slow their pace, opting to jab one another near the fence. With 20 seconds to go, Lazaro wins a takedown battle and closes the round in Vick’s half guard.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Vick
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Vick
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Vick

Round 3

Vick lands another pair of hard, straight rights in the opening minute of the final round, forcing Lazaro to close the gap and clinch on the fence. Vick reverses the position and looks for a Thai clinch, but Lazaro gets an underhook and shoves him away to reset in the center. There’s wild swinging from both guys now, and Vick sends another left high kick upstairs. This one puts Lazaro on the ground, but the Nova Uniao product recovers quickly and gets back on his feet to push Vick against the cage. Lazaro receives a kick to the cup and takes a moment to recover, and now the lightweights resume with about one minute left in the fight. Lazaro is swinging for the fences with big right hands, but Vick is staying clear. Vick flies into range with a leaping knee and is knocked to the ground, where he spends the final 10 seconds with Lazaro standing over him.

Holloway begins striking down the center with hard, straight punches, answered in kind by Collard, who catches a kick and smashes the Hawaiian with a big left hand. Collard tries to throw a knee in the Thai clinch, gets tripped to the ground and allowed back up by Holloway. A switch kick from Collard catches Holloway leaning over with a shin to the nose. Holloway puts a spinning kick in Collard’s breadbasket, gets shoved against the fence for a moment and circles out. Holloway knocks Collard backward with a right hook on the chin, then closes the gap on Collard near the fence and hits the newcomer with a spinning kick. Another right hand from Hollway snaps back Collard’s head, but Collard catches a kick a few seconds later to rush Holloway to the ground. Holloway pops right back up, drills Collard with a right cross and tacks on a jump knee. Collard tries to fire back but Holloway gets on his horse and evades the counterattack. Midway through the round, Collard shoots for a double-leg on the fence, but Holloway peels him off and circles out. Collard grabs a single-leg and Holloway scrambles to jump on his back, but gives up the position in order to stand and continue trading strikes. Collard ducks under a wide left hook and gets trapped against the fence, where Holloway thumps his opponent’s body with a hard right kick. Collard finally gets Holloway to the ground in the final minute but then has to avoid an armbar and a triangle choke from the Hawaiian.

A couple slapping leg kicks score for Collard before he changes levels to try a single-leg, then switches to a double. Holloway gives Collard some elbows to the side of the head while defending with his back to the fence. Now, Holloway circles out and Collard gives chase, walking into a right hand and the diving for a long shot. Holloway drills Collard with a knee to the body and shoves him to the ground, then comes down to the half guard of “Cassius.” Collard rolls over to his stomach and fends off a rear-naked choke attempt midway through the final round. Holloway sits up in full mount to hit Collard with an elbow, then three or four big punches. Collard looks spent, taking hard shots to his unprotected face. Collard rolls to his belly again, Holloway unloads with a series of 10 big right hands, and referee Dan Miragliotta has seen enough.

Francis Carmont vs. Thales Leites

Round 1

Leites wades into range behind wide punches and puts Carmont on the fence with an underhook, but Carmont snuffs out the Brazilian’s takedown attempt in the ensuing clinch. Carmont kicks the lead leg out from underneath Leites, who stands up to continue throwing wide right hands. Halfway through the round, Leites clinches up again, but it doesn’t lead to a takedown. Another takedown attempt from Pyle is sidestepped, and then “Quicksand” has to scramble back to his feet after having a kick caught and being thrown to the ground. Mein puts a pair of left hooks on Pyle’s head in quick succession, and Pyle hits the canvas like a bag of bricks. Referee Dan Miragliotta nearly stops the fight there, but instead allows Mein to tack on five or six more lefts on the ground before stepping in.

Benson Henderson vs. Rafael dos Anjos

Round 1

Veteran official “Big” John McCarthy is the referee for tonight’s lightweight main event, with judges Derek Cleary, Chris Lee and Cardo Urso scoring at cageside. Dos Anjos strikes first with a kick to Henderson’s chest, and the ex-champ replies with a hard low kick as the southpaws test the range. Henderson gets through with a right hook, answered by a straight shot down the center. Dos Anjos takes a body blow, rips back with a right hook to Henderson’s gut and a low kick to follow. A low kick from Henderson chops the base out from under dos Anjos, who quickly returns to his feet and hits Henderson with a loud body kick. Henderson is on the outside, pumping his jab to keep dos Anjos from pressing out from the center. Dos Anjos catches Henderson with a leaping knee, stuffs a double-leg attempt and cracks “Smooth” with a searing left hook on the jaw. Henderson goes limp and referee McCarthy steps in to wave off the fight before dos Anjos can do any further damage. Henderson isn’t pleased with the stoppage, but McCarthy insists that “he went out.”
