Benson
Henderson hungers for hardware that once belonged to him.
The former Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight titleholder tipped the scales at 155.5 pounds for his five-round clash with the once-beaten Rustam Khabilov (156) in the UFC Fight Night “Henderson vs. Khabilov” main event on Saturday at Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, N.M. Lightweight co-headliners Diego Sanchez (155) and Ross Pearson (155.5) also met their contracted weight requirements at Friday’s official weigh-in.
Henderson, 30, has rattled off 18 wins in his past 20 outings,
losing only to reigning UFC lightweight champion Anthony
Pettis. “Smooth” last fought at UFC on Fox 10 in January, when
he eked out a controversial split decision over Josh Thomson
at the United Center in Chicago. An NAIA All-American wrestler at
Dana College in Nebraska, Henderson operates out of the
MMA Lab, where he holds the rank of black belt in Brazilian
jiu-jitsu under Royce Gracie
disciple John Crouch. He has compiled an 8-1 record since arriving
in the UFC in April 2011.
Anchored at the Jackson-Wink MMA camp, Khabilov will enter the cage on a six-fight winning streak. The 27-year-old Dagestani brute last competed at UFC Fight Night “Fight for the Troops 3” in November, when he earned a unanimous verdict over Jorge Masvidal at Fort Campbell in Hopkinsville, Ky. A onetime combat sambo world champion, “Tiger” has secured more than half (nine) of his 17 professional victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission. Khabilov owns a perfect 3-0 mark inside the Octagon.
