UFC Fight Night in Halifax Gets Aljamain Sterling-Mitch Gagnon, Five Other Bouts

A pair of bantamweights have been added to UFC Fight Night “MacDonald vs. Saffiedine,” as Aljamain Sterling will face Mitch Gagnon on Oct. 4.

Gagnon confirmed the matchup to The Sudbury Star on Tuesday, and the promotion officially announced the pairing on Thursday. In addition, the UFC announced five other bouts for the Oct. 4 bill: “The Ultimate Fighter: Nations” 185-pound winner Elias Theodoreau meets Bruno Santos at middleweight; “TUF: Nations” welterweight champ Chad Laprise takes on Yosdenis Cedeno at 155 pounds; Olivier Aubin-Mercier battles Jake Lindsey at lightweight; Jason Saggo squares off against newcomer Paul Felder at 155; and Matt Dwyer makes his Octagon debut against Albert Tumenov in a welterweight tilt. The event is set to take place at Halifax Metro Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The developing fight card is topped by welterweights Rory MacDonald and Tarec Saffiedine.

Sterling, an undefeated former Cage Fighting Fury Championships bantamweight titlist, will attempt to push his professional record to 11-0 with a win in October. The Serra-Longo Fight Team member has impressed in his first two outings under the Zuffa banner, besting Cody Gibson on points in his debut before finishing Hugo Viana with punches on July 16.

Gagnon has also impressed as of late. After dropping his UFC premiere against Bryan Carraway in 2012, the 29-year-old has rallied to win three straight fights. With wins over the likes of Dustin Kimura and Tim Gorman his last two appearances inside the Octagon, Gagnon will pose a strong stylistic threat to the flashy Sterling.
