Australian middleweight Robert Whittaker staked his claim as a top contender in the division with an absolutely thrilling first-round knockout of Derek Brunson in the main event of UFC Fight Night 101 “Whittaker vs. Brunson.”
Brunson rocked the Aussie early with a volley of punches and as Whittaker stumbled back and retreated to clear his head, Brunson chased after him. Brunson continued to tag his woozy foe with wild punches, but when he ran right after Whittaker during a flurry, he was cracked by a counter left hook. From there, Whittaker turned the tides, ripped him with punches and then dropped him with a right head kick. From there, the American was essentially out while he covered up, trying to defend the incoming avalanche of punches until Herb Dean jumped in and pulled him off.
