UFC Targets Stout-Kelly for Super Bowl Weekend

Lightweights Sam Stout (Pictured) and Paul Kelly have agreed to square off on Super Bowl weekend at UFC 126, going down Feb. 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Though the bout has not yet been made official, verbal agreements are reportedly in place. The news was first released by British MMA outlet Fighter’s Only.

Stout began his career in 2003 and made his UFC debut four years later at UFC 58, defeating Spencer Fisher in a career-defining performance. Battling through injuries, he has had mixed results inside the Octagon, as the Canadian has never put together more than two consecutive wins inside the UFC cage. Stout is famous for his quick, accurate striking attack and his durability. A winner of five “Fight of the Night” performance bonus checks, the 26-year-old has won three of his last four fights. Stout eked out a contentious split decision over British import Paul Taylor at UFC 121 in October. The Shawn Tompkins protégé holds half of his 16 career victories by knockout.

Kelly opened his career as a middleweight before dropping down to welterweight and eventually lightweight. Of his 11 career victories, eight have come by way of stoppage. Like Stout, Kelly has had his ups and downs with the UFC, though he still sports a respectable 5-3 record with the promotion. Less than a week ago, Kelly earned a second-round TKO over T.J. O’Brien on the UFC 123 undercard. The victory marked Kelly’s third win at lightweight. The Brit also holds victories over Matt Veach and Roli Delgado at 155 pounds.

UFC 126 will be headlined by a middleweight title clash between longtime champion Anderson Silva and the rejuvenated Vitor Belfort. Additionally, the show will feature a pivotal light heavyweight tilt between blue-chippers Ryan Bader and Jon Jones, as well as a bantamweight scrap between former titleholder Miguel Torres and Antonio Banuelos.
