A pair of former UFC flyweight contenders will square off in the Rizin Fighting Federation 9 headliner when Kyoji Horiguchi meets Ian McCall on May 6.
The promotion on Wednesday announced the pairing, which will be contested at 134 pounds. Rizin FF 9 takes place at the Marine Messe Fukuoka in Fukuoka, Japan. Three other bouts were announced for the card: Manel Kape vs. Kai Asakura at 130 pounds, Kanna Asakura vs. Melissa Sophia Karagianis at atomweight and Kanako Murata vs. Weili Zhang at strawweight.
Horiguchi defeated Hideo Tokoro, Gabriel Leite de Oliveira, Kape and Shintaro Ishiwatari to capture Rizin’s bantamweight grand prix in 2017. The 27-year-old Japanese fighter is 8-0 since his flyweight title bout defeat to Demetrious Johnson at UFC 186 in April 2015.
McCall, meanwhile, returned to action for the first time in nearly three years under the Rizin banner on Dec. 29, when he suffered a first-round TKO defeat to Kape in a quarterfinal bout of the bantamweight grand prix. “Uncle Creepy” went 2-3-1 during his stint in the UFC, but had several fights fall through toward the end of his promotional tenure.
