UFC Welterweight Contender Darren Till on Potential ‘Wonderboy’ Clash: ‘His Daddy Won’t Let Him’

Prior to his Saturday night loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio at UFC on Fox 26, Mike Perry was stumping for a potential bout with undefeated Brit Darren Till. In light of Perry’s defeat, Till has a new, wondrous target.

“As I’ve said in the past, I don’t really care about rankings, so I’m not one to say, ‘just because he’s coming off a loss let’s not fight,’” Till told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of “The MMA Hour.” “I’m still game to fight him, but obviously it’s not really smart matchmaking now because I’m coming off a win and he’s coming off a loss.”

Till is now of the opinion he could end up against once-beaten contender Kamaru Usman if Usman defeats Emil Weber Meek at UFC Fight Night 124 on Jan. 14, or if Till gets his preference, former two-time UFC title challenger Stephen Thompson.

“I know Usman has a fight so maybe he’s out of the question,” said Till. “So maybe ‘Wonderboy,’ then maybe one more and then a title shot and that’s me: champion.” Till last fought on Oct. 21, destroying “Cowboy” Donald Cerrone in the first round of their UFC Fight Night 118 headliner in Gdansk, Poland. After Saturday night’s UFC main event between Rafael dos Anjos and Robbie Lawler, Till took to Twitter to respond to a “Wonderboy” tweet in hopes of finding himself an opponent.

“That was a WAR! Hats off to both RDA and Robbie for that effort! I can be back in the Octagon this March. @RdosAnjosMMA, let’s give the fans another treat. We both want gold, it’s only fitting we battle for it!,” tweeted Thompson on Saturday evening. Till replied to Thompson’s post with his preferred social media trademark, a gorilla emoji

The 24-year-old Liverpudlian is not exactly sanguine about Thompson signing on to fight him, though.

“No, his daddy won’t let him,” Till said when asked if he thought the bout would materialize, referring to Thompson’s father, trainer and manager, Ray Thompson.

Beyond Thompson’s two previous title challenges, there is another particular reason that Till is keen on a Thompson showdown: the chance to prove not just that he’s the best striker at 170 pounds, but in the entire UFC.

“It’s because he’s a world-class striker, that’s why,” Till explained. “His striking ability is so good. I know with me coming from a muay Thai background and him coming from karate, I can nullify everything he’s does and prove that I am the most superior striker in all the UFC.”

Till is expected to return to the cage at UFC Fight Night 127, scheduled for March 17 at the O2 Arena in London, England.
