UFC on Fox 12 Weigh-in Results: Matt Brown Misses Mark for Title Eliminator

Editor's note: This story was updated at 1:08 a.m. ET on July 26 to reflect the fact that neither Matt Brown nor Juliana de Lima Carneiro will be fined for failure to make weight.

Through-the-roof anticipation precedes the Robbie Lawler-Matt Brown showdown in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s cutthroat welterweight division, but the underdog failed to clear his first hurdle.

Brown checked in at 172.5 pounds at Friday's official weigh-in and did not attempt to shed the excess weight. He was originally going to be fined 20 percent of his purse. However, according to a report on UFC.com, because Brown was directed not to cut more weight by a California State Athletic Commission doctor, he will not be penalized.

Lawler (171) met his contracted weight requirement ahead of their five-round title eliminator in the UFC on Fox 12 main event on Saturday at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., with the winner expected to lock down a shot at reigning welterweight champion Johny Hendricks. Light heavyweight co-headliners Anthony Johnson (204.5) and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (205.5) made weight without incident.

Having dropped anchor at American Top Team, Lawler has won four of his past five fights. The 32-year-old former EliteXC champion last fought at UFC 173 in May, when he put away Jake Ellenberger with a third-round knee strike and follow-up punches at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Long established as one of MMA’s more potent strikers, the “Ruthless” one has secured 19 of his 23 career victories by knockout or technical knockout. Lawler owns an 8-4 record in the UFC.

Brown has finished six opponents during his current seven-fight winning streak. The 33-year-old Ohioan last appeared at a UFC Fight Night event in May, when he took out onetime Jungle Fight champion Erick Silva with third-round punches at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati. A quarterfinalist on Season 7 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series, Brown has compiled a 12-5 mark since touching down in the UFC in June 2008.

UFC on Fox 12 “Lawler vs. Brown” -- which will air live on Fox at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT -- will also feature a featherweight scrap pitting Jackson-Wink MMA’s Clay Guida (145) against “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 14 finalist Dennis Bermudez (146) and a lightweight duel pairing former Strikeforce champion Josh Thomson (155) with Bobby Green (155.5). Two hours prior, Fox will also carry four preliminary matchups: Jorge Masvidal (155.5) vs. Daron Cruickshank (155.5), Kyle Kingsbury (204.5) vs. Patrick Cummins (206), Tim Means (170.5) vs. Hernani Perpetuo (171) and Mike de la Torre (146) vs. Brian Ortega (145.5).

The four remaining undercard bouts will stream to UFC Fight Pass at 4:15 p.m. ET/1:15 p.m. PT, as Tiago dos Santos e Silva (155) meets Akbarh Arreola (155.5), Steven Siler (146) faces Noad Lahat (145), Gilbert Burns (170) confronts Andreas Stahl (171) and Joanna Jedrzejczyk (115) battles Juliana de Lima Carneiro (**116.5).
