Junior dos Santos and Stipe Miocic each earned a $50,000 “Fight of the Night” paycheck for their brutal five-round battle in the UFC on Fox 13 main event at U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix on Saturday night.
While dos Santos emerged from the back-and-forth slugfest with a unanimous verdict on the judges’ scorecards, Miocic landed plenty of offense of his own throughout the 25-minute affair. In the end, however, “Cigano” connected more consistently. According to FightMetric.com, dos Santos held a 123-to-89 advantage in significant strikes, outlanding his foe in each frame.
Matt Mitrione, meanwhile, banked a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his first-round technical knockout victory over Gabriel Gonzaga in their heavyweight clash. “Meathead” dropped Gonzaga with a short left hook and polished his Brazilian adversary off with follow-up ground-and-pound 1:59 into the opening stanza.
The evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award went to Ian Entwistle, who tapped Anthony Birchak with a heel hook 64 seconds into the first round of their bantamweight matchup in the evening’s opening bout. It was the seventh first-round victory via submission of Entwistle’s professional career.
