UFC on Fox 28 Weigh-ins: Josh Emmett, Jeremy Stephens on Point for Featherweight Headliner

UFC on Fox 28 headliners Josh Emmett (146) and Jeremy Stephens (146) both hit their featherweight marks on Friday morning, making their Saturday night main event official. Emmett took the scale much faster than his counterpart, but at 10:29 a.m. ET, Stephens hit 146 without the towel, green lighting the contest.

Co-headliners Jessica Andrade and Tecia Torres, who may well be vying for the next shot at the UFC women’s strawweight title after the Rose Namajunas-Joanna Jedrzejczyk rematch in April, hit the scale back-to-back. Both fighters checked in at 116 pounds.

One half of the Fox Sports 1 undercard feature, former UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao (136) successfully made it back to the division he once ruled. Since his second loss to T.J. Dillashaw in July 2015, the Brazilian has battled the scale mightily, despite never officially missing weight. Barao moved up to featherweight for two Octagon bouts before trying to return to bantamweight for his fight with Aljamain Sterling at UFC 214 last July, but the California State Athletic Commission mandated that the contest take place at a 140-pound catchweight. Barao’s opponent, Brian Kelleher, tipped the beam at 136 as well.

Flyweight Alex Perez was the last fighter to check in, stepping up with just 15 minutes left in the two-hour weigh-in period. He initially weighed in a half pound overweight at 126.5, but the Florida State Boxing Commission afforded him an additional hour to make weight. Perez opted not to continue cutting and will forfeit 20 percent of his purse to opponent Eric Shelton (126).

Elsewhere, debuting bantamweight Manny Bermudez initially checked in overweight at 137 pounds, but once he stripped down and got behind a towel, he made 136 and was cleared for the card’s opening bout against Albert Morales (135).

UFC on Fox 28 emanates from the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla., the promotion’s third event from the Magic City. Sherdog’s live play-by-play will kick off at approximately 4:15 p.m. ET on Saturday.
