While it’s a busy weekend overall in combat sports, one under-the-radar bout saw Ben Saunders earn a quick victory over fellow UFC veteran Jacob Volkmann on the regional circuit Friday night.
Competing for the first time since a loss to Patrick Cote at UFC Fight Night “Dillashaw vs. Cruz” on Jan. 17, Saunders tapped out Volkmann with an armbar just 17 seconds into their matchup at Fight Night at the Island in Minnesota. Eddie Bravo posted video of the contest on his Instagram account.
Saunders’ loss to Cote snapped a three-fight winning streak in the Octagon for the “Killa B.” The 33-year-old’s contract expired after the bout, and Saunders revealed on mixedmartialarts.com that a variety of personal issues prevented him from pursuing a new deal at the time.
Volkmann, meanwhile, had won four of his previous six bouts since being released from the UFC in 2013. During that time the Minnesota native has competed for a number of promotions including World Series of Fighting and Legacy Fighting Championship.
