Vitaly Minakov Defends Heavyweight Title Against Cheick Kongo in Bellator 115 Headliner
A heavyweight title clash between Vitaly
Minakov and Cheick Kongo
will headline Bellator
115, promotion officials announced Friday.
Bellator 115 takes place April 4 from the Reno Events Center in Reno, Nev., and airs live on Spike TV. No additional bouts have been announced for the show, but the preliminary draw is slated to stream live on Spike.com.
Minakov, 28, has been perfect as a professional through 13 fights, winning the 2013 Summer Series tournament by knocking out Ron Sparks and Ryan Martinez. The combat sambo world champion then did the same to countryman Alexander Volkov, lifting the heavyweight title from around the waist of “Drago” at Bellator 108.
A longtime UFC talent, Kongo parted ways with the Las Vegas-based promotion following an April defeat to Roy Nelson. However, the Frenchman rebounded with a pair of triumphs in the Bellator cage, stopping Mark Godbeer and then outpointing Peter Graham to win the Season 9 tournament and earn his shot at the heavyweight title.
