Round 1
French had a single-leg a minute into the fight and the remainder of the round played out on the ground. French attempted a beautiful arm-triangle from the mount before rolling with the submission into guard. Bedard escaped but soon dealt with a rear-naked choke attempt, which he survived as well. The first round goes to French, 10-9.
Round 2
Nice takedown by French early, and the featherweights are reversing one another all over the mat. Bedard went for a guillotine but couldn't finish it. French swept and Bedard again went for the choke, but French survived, a reversal of the opening period. 10-9 Bedard
Round 3
Bedard with the early takedown and the fighters grappled along the cage fencing inside French's guard. With a minute left Bedard finally passed to mount, but French quickly placed him back in the guard.
After 15 minutes, judges at cageside saw it 30-27 in favor of Bedard. Sherdog.com agreed with the winner but not the score: 29-28 Bedard.
Brian Bowles Vs. Charlie Valencia (Pictures)
Round 1
Good opening period from the bantamweights. Valencia and Bowles came out swinging before Bowles scored a nice double-leg takedown along the fence. Valencia allowed Bowles to mount so he could reverse him. After returning to the feet Valencia again went in for a takedown and Bowles countered with a guillotine choke, but could not finish. Bowles landed the best strike of the round when he followed a missed right straight with a clean left hook that staggered Valencia and momentarily dropped him to a knee. Bowles finished the round with another takedown. Round one to Bowles, 10-9.
Round 2
The 135-pounders opened with strikes to start the second, and Valencia was hurt with an accidental knee to the groin. After taking a minute t recover, Valencia and Bowles went back to striking. Valencia missed a kick to the head and followed with a flying knee, but instead he jumped into a Bowles' right cross that put him on his back. In the guard, Bowles tried to finish but Valencia fought well defensively. Attempting a sweep from the guard, Valencia made a mistake and gave up his back. Bowles capitalized on the chance to finish by securing a rear-naked choke at the 2:50 mark, and Valencia tapped.
Micah Miller (Pictures) Vs. Cub Swanson (Pictures)
Round 1
Excellent first round. Right off the bat Swanson scored a double-leg and the lightweights around. Miller's looking for submissions from all angles, including a gogoplata attempt, but Swanson won't have it. Swanson found himself over Miller and tried flying strikes ala Sakuraba circa 2001. He allowed Miller to stand up and from there it was toe-to-toe every time they got close. Miller landed some knees to the body and head while Swanson connected on a couple of loopy overhand rights, one of which clipped Miller. Swanson followed with a takedown and Miller continued to looked for submissions, which Cub defended nicely. 10-9 Swanson.
Round 2
Action starts in the clinch and Miller lands a knee to the stomach that dropped Swanson. Miller looks to end it but Swanson hangs tough and he was able to escape. In Miller's guard, Swanson pounded away with punches. Again Miller looked for a submission, this time an armbar, which Swanson escaped They took turns on takedowns and submission attempts. Towards the end of the round Swanson scored a takedown and tried a guillotine but couldn't finish. Miller reversed, had Swanson in his guard, and went for another gogoplata that he couldn't complete. They returned to the feet and Swanson won an exchange of punches. Swanson got Miller in a guillotine but couldn't finish to end the round. 10-9 Swanson.
Round 3
With both fatigued from the first 10 minutes setting in, action in the final period waned. Swanson scored a takedown and was swept as Miller took his back. Miller tried to secure a rear-naked choke and Swanson escaped to his feet, which didn't result in any fireworks. With a minute left in the fight, Swanson scored a nice overhand right that staggered Miller. Swanson followed with a flurry and Miller went in for a takedown, which might set up a guillotine if Miller didn't defend well with an arm. Action closed as a tired Miller threw uninspired punches to Swanson, who fought from his back. Judges at ringside saw it 30-27 across the board for Swanson. Sherdog.com agreed.
Alex Serdyukov (Pictures) Vs. John Alessio (Pictures)
Round 1
Opening minute of the fight saw the welterweights circle, sizing one another up. Alessio scored with a nice right-left and Serdyukov responded by taking a shot at a double. Alessio countered with a guillotine and wrapped it as they went to the ground. Alessio adjusted the deep choke and forced a tapout at 1:17 of round one.
Brock Larson (Pictures) Vs. Kevin Knabjan (Pictures)
Round 1
Eight seconds into the fight the southpaw Larson dropped Knabjan with a straight left. Larson pounced on Knabjan, a replacement for WEC champion Carlos Condit, but Knabjan somehow managed to return to his feet. Larson looked for a standing rear-naked choke but Knabjan spun out. From there, Larson forced Knabjan into the fence and landed a clean knee to the jaw. Knabjan fell to the canvas and Larson followed with punches until referee Steve Mazzagatti moved in to stop the contest 27 seconds after the opening bell. After the fight, Larson called out Condit, who is nursing a separated shoulder.
Craig Zellner (Pictures) Vs. Brian Stann (Pictures)
Round 1
Stann roughs Zellner up with wild punches and several knees to the chin. Zellner shoots lazily and ends up on the bottom working from guard. Stann tees off with more punches. The fighters are back to their feet. Zellner again takes a lazy shot and ends up on his back. Zellner working strikes from his opponent's closed guard. Stann, after briefly standing up again, pounds down on Zellner until the referee stops the contest. Complete domination by Brian Stann.
Josh Smith Vs. Alex Karalexis (Pictures)
Round 1
Karalexis cracks Smith with a right hand. Smith pushses Karalexis against the cage. The Ultimate Fighter veteran takes Smith to the floor. Smith crawls up the cage with his back and gets back to his feet. Smith lands a hard kick to Karalexis' gut. Karalexis answers with a right hand and another takedown. Karalexis stands up and rains leather downward. Sherdog.com scores the first frame 10-9 for Karalexis.
Round 2
Smith lands a right hand "Superman" punch that stuns Karalexis. Karalexis recovers and briefly takes Smith's back while standing. Karalexis has a huge mouse under his left eye. The TUF veteran scores another takedown but is caught in a triangle choke. He lifts Smith into the air and slams him to the mat. Shortly after, he escapes the hold. Karalexis stands over Smith, throwing strikes. Karalexis passes guard while standing and falls into side-control. Sherdog.com sees the round 10-9 for Karalexis.
Round 3
Karalexis' eye is swollen shut. Smith rushes in and clinches with Karalexis. The TUF veteran slams him to the mat and takes the mount. Smith escapes and goes for a heel hook but Karalexis has none of it. Alex now working from his opponent's closed guard. Karalexis lands several hard shots to Smith's ribcage. Karalexis stands up and eats an upkick for his effort. Karalexis is back down in Smith's guard. Now back to his feet. Karalexis has a point taken for stomping the downed fighter's midsection. Sherdog.com scores the round 9-9 (Karalexis - deducted point). The official scores are read as 28-28, 29-27 and 29-27 for Karalexis.
Rani Yahya (Pictures) Vs. Mark Hominick (Pictures)
Round 1
Yahya desperately shoots over and over but Hominick has none of it. Yahya finally hops on his back and drags him down. He sinks his arm under Hominick's chin and forces a tapout with a rear naked choke. Yahya was unsuccessful on several early takedowns in the opening seconds but otherwise a very impressive WEC debut for the Brazilian. The official time is 1:19.
Urijah Faber (Pictures) vs. Chance Farrar (Pictures)
Round 1
Faber hits Farrar with a straight right. Farrar shoots in and slams Faber to the mat. Faber reverses but is ripped back down to the floor. Faber stands up and returns the slam but he ends up back on the bottom. Excellent scrambles in this bout. Faber jumps on his back and secures a rear naked choke. The tapout comes shortly after at the 3:19 mark of the first stanza.
