Weekend Rundown: Teixeira Wins 10th Straight

Brazil’s top light heavyweight free agent made quick work of an overmatched opponent Saturday at Shooto Brazil 23, the first stop on what could be Glover Teixeira’s last tour of his home circuit before jumping stateside.
Inside the Hebrew Social and Sports Club in Rio de Janeiro, the 31-year-old Teixeira used his famously heavy hands to drub Amapaense Simao Melo, a replacement for original adversary Maurilio “Touro” de Souza. After a brief struggle on the ground, Teixeira unleashed a flurry of knees and punches, finishing the 211-pound catchweight contest with a lights-out right cross at 1:49 of the opening round.

“I expect to solve my visa issues in July, and I just have to thank my fans and people who want to see me in the U.S. for their support,” Teixeira told Sherdog.com after the win. “My opponent was a tough and brave guy, but I used my experience and my training with coach Claudio Coelho and Pedro Rizzo at Delfim Boxing Academy. It’s always great to win, but even better to win with a knockout.”

Imada Stuns Another Shoot Boxer
With his home MMA promotion in its summer hiatus, two-time Bellator Fighting Championship lightweight tournament finalist Toby Imada made another successful trip to the shoot boxing ring Saturday in the main event of Shoot Boxing “Act 3: SB 169” at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.
Imada, 33, made a shocking run through the standup organization’s 2010 S-Cup tourney in November, topping highly regarded kickboxers Andy Souwer and Takaaki Umeno before being chopped down in the final by former K-1 MAX champ Buakaw Por. Pramuk. On Saturday, Imada was matched against SB East Pacific welterweight ace Hiroki Shishido, a pupil of Shoot Boxing founder Caesar Takeshi. The Californian made use of his judo black belt in landing multiple point-scoring throws and a standing arm-triangle choke attempt on Shishido, earning a unanimous decision (30-27, 29-27, 29-28) after three rounds.
Following the win, Imada expressed interest in competing on the upcoming “Shoot the Shooto,” a two-day co-promotion between Shoot Boxing and Shooto set for Nov. 5-6 at Tokyo Dome City Hall. Chairman Takeshi, meanwhile, declared his intent to book a rematch between Imada and Souwer.
Daly Blindsides Eye, Lozano Wins Again in Ohio
Irish standout Aisling Daly handed Ohio-based up-and-comer Jessica Eye her first defeat Saturday, claiming the North American Allied Fight Series women’s 125-pound title in the main event of NAAFS “Fight Night in the Flats 7” at Nautica Pavilion in Cleveland.
Though Eye damaged her visiting opponent with ground-and-pound in the opening stanza, “Ais the Bash” utilized her submission skills to turn the tides in the second. Countering a heel hook attempt, Daly spun to take the American’s back and sank in a deep rear-naked choke which almost instantly forced Eye to tap out at the 4:00 mark. Prior to the loss, Eye reportedly signed a multi-fight deal with Bellator Fighting Championships, whose chairman and CEO, Bjorn Rebney, was in attendance. Daly, who suffered her first loss inside Bellator’s cage last August, improved to 11-2 with nine finishes.
Another Bellator vet, fourth-season welterweight tourney entrant Chris Lozano, won his second straight under the NAAFS banner by tapping Minnesotan Derek Smith with a rear-naked choke at 2:20 of the first round. It was the first submission win of the heavy-handed Lozano’s career, moving his mark to 8-1.
Unbeaten prospect Stipe Miocic -- who trains alongside Eye and Lozano at Strong Style Fight Team in Independence, Ohio -- won the NAAFS heavyweight strap by chopping down Bobby Brents, who submitted at 4:27 of round two after being buckled by a leg kick. Ohioan Travis Clark also stayed perfect, improving to 6-0 and taking the NAAFS middleweight belt by leg-kicking Alan Aeschlimann to a stoppage at 4:14 of round three.

Onetime UFC middleweight title contender Patrick Cote continued on his comeback trail with a unanimous decision win over fellow Octagon vet Todd Brown at Ringside MMA 11, which took place Saturday at Le Colisee in Quebec City, Canada. On the undercard, former NHL enforcer Donald Brashear made his MMA debut a speedy one, as the 39-year-old heavyweight pounded out late replacement Mathieu Bergeron in just 21 seconds.
Spanish heavyweight Rogent Lloret won his second on the year Saturday in the headliner of Almogavers 5 at Hesperia Tower Hotel in Barcelona. Llorent submitted striker Haris Reiz with an arm-triangle choke in the second round of their bout, while the unknown Leandro Gontijo upset Lithuanian bantamweight standout Artemij Sitenkov with a second-round technical knockout.
While the original main event of Saturday’s Olympian MMA Championships card in Liverpool, England, was lost in May when Scottish bantamweight James Doolan suffered a broken hand, several prospects were still on-hand to impress at OMMAC 10 “Step in the Arena.” Among the winners were Mancunian welterweight Ali Arish (first-round KO of Wayne Murrie), undefeated featherweight Chris Fishgold (68-second rear-naked choke submission of Danny Welsh) and 7-0 middleweight Jack “Hammer” Marshman (97-second KO of Lee Chadwick).
Nebraskan Nick Honstein captured his second Australian featherweight title Saturday at Brace for War 9 in Townsville, Queensland, Australia, snatching BFW champ Edwin Arana’s belt with a rear-naked choke at 2:08 of round one. Honstein, who fights out of Platinum Extreme in Sydney, has submitted five straight opponents since making the move Down Under in 2010.
Former M-1 light heavyweight champion Vyacheslav Vasilevsky continued his middleweight campaign Saturday with a unanimous decision over Warsaw’s Robert Jocz at Pro Fight 6 in Wloclawek, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Poland. It was the Russian’s fourth victory in three months, extending his impressive unbeaten streak to 14-0 since 2008, while Jocz dropped his third straight, the hardest skid of his career.
South Korea’s A Sol Kwon added Shooto vet Yukinari Tamura to his list of victims Sunday at Heat 18 in Osaka, Japan. Kwon relinquished his Heat welterweight title and cut to 155 pounds to take on “Hibiki,” who he knocked out in just 31 seconds with a Superman punch and follow-up knee strike. Since returning from a 15-month absence in January 2010, Kwon has seven of nine starts, including four knockouts and one submission. Dream Super Hulk champ Ikuhisa Minowa also picked up a win at Heat 18, outpointing Nagoya-based Brazilian Carlos Toyota in a grappling-heavy, three-round affair.
