Middleweights Chris
Weidman and Tom Lawlor
(Pictured; file photo) have reached a verbal agreement to face one
another at
UFC 138 on Nov. 19, likely at the HP Pavilion in San Jose,
Calif. The UFC on Saturday announced the matchup via Twitter.
Arguably the sport’s top prospect at 185 pounds, Weidman (6-0, 2-0 UFC) last appeared at UFC 131 in June, when he submitted Canadian Jesse Bongfeldt with a first-round guillotine choke at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. A protégé of former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra and respected striking coach Ray Longo, the 27-year-old Baldwin, N.Y., native has secured four of his six professional victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission. Weidman burst on the global scene in 2009, when he qualified for the prestigious Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships after only eight months of formal training and pushed seven-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Andre Galvao to the limit in a memorable match. He was a four-time collegiate wrestling All-American at Nassau Community College and Hofstra University.
Lawlor (7-3, 1 NC, 3-2 UFC) last fought at UFC 121 in October, when he defeated former middleweight title contender Patrick Cote by unanimous decision at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The victory snapped a two-fight losing streak for “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 8 alum. Lawlor, a 29-year-old Fall River, Mass., native, has become known for his pre-fight histrionics, which have included his imitating UFC hall of famer Dan Severn and Art Jimmerson, among others. Wins over the American Kickboxing Academy’s Kyle Kingsbury and “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 7 finalist C.B. Dollaway bolster his resume. Lawlor was a three-time national wrestling champion at the University of Central Florida.
UFC 138, though not yet officially announced, will likely be headlined by an anticipated heavyweight title bout pitting unbeaten champion Cain Velasquez against surging No. 1 contender Junior dos Santos.
