Weidman in Against Maia for ‘UFC on Fox 2’ Main Card

Unbeaten middleweight Chris Weidman is about to take a big step up.

The former Hofstra wrestling standout has agreed to square off against Brazilian grappling wiz Demian Maia on Jan. 28, UFC President Dana White announced Tuesday via Twitter. Maia was left without a match when original opponent Michael Bisping was called upon to replace Mark Munoz and take on Chael Sonnen in the evening’s co-main event.

Both 185-pound affairs will feature on the main card of UFC on Fox 2, as will a headlining No. 1 contender’s bout in the 205-pound division between ex-champ Rashad Evans and undefeated Phil Davis. The event takes place at the United Center in Chicago and kicks off with an eight-bout preliminary card on Fuel TV.

A pupil of Matt Serra, Weidman has built a solid 7-0 record in less than three years as a professional. The 27-year-old New Yorker made his Octagon debut with only four fights to his name and earned a unanimous decision over divisional stalwart Alessio Sakara. In the second half of 2011, Weidman took out two more experienced opponents, Jesse Bongfeldt and Tom Lawlor, both via first-round submission.

Maia, 34, has gone 3-1 since dropping a tepid five-round decision to Anderson Silva in April 2010, the loss coming against Munoz last June in a three-round thriller. The Wand Fight Team representative rebounded to close out 2011 with a sound outpointing of ex-Sengoku titlist Jorge Santiago in October.
