Cathal Pendred will return to the Octagon for the first time since his gutsy performance UFC Fight Night “McGregor vs. Brandao”, as he takes on Gasan Umalatov at UFC Fight Night “Nelson vs. Story.”
UFC officials announced the welterweight fight on Friday. UFC Fight Night Sweden takes place at the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm on Oct. 4 and includes a welterweight matchup pitting Alexander Yakovlev against Nicholas Musoke as well as a light heavyweight showdown between Ilir Latifi and Jan Blachowicz.
Pendred, friend and training partner of Conor McGregor, entered the UFC fray following a semifinal showing on “The Ultimate Fighter 19.” The Irishman’s official Zuffa debut took place at middleweight against fellow TUF alum Mike King. After nearly being finished in the first round, Pendred came back to secure the rear-naked choke victory and earn a $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonus.
Umalatov will be looking to build upon his impressive decision victory against Paulo Thiago at “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3” finale in May. The win pushed “Cobra’s” record in the UFC to 1-1 following a defeat in his debut to Neil Magny at UFC 169. Umalatov has never been finished, with all three of his losses coming by way of the judges’ scorecards.
