With ‘Mouse’ Flyweight-Bound, Wineland-Bedford Set for UFC on Fox 2

Demetrious Johnson will no longer compete against Eddie Wineland at UFC on Fox 2, promotion officials announced Wednesday. Instead, “Ultimate Fighter” Season 14 bantamweight standout Johnny Bedford will replace “Mighty Mouse” against the former World Extreme Cagefighting champion.

Headlined by a light heavyweight matchup between Rashad Evans and Phil Davis, UFC on Fox 2 is scheduled to take place Jan. 28 at the United Center in Chicago. Also showcasing an important middleweight contest between Chael Sonnen and Mark Munoz, the event marks the UFC’s second effort on network television and the first of four planned live Fox broadcasts in 2012.

As announced on Saturday, Johnson will participate in a four-man, 125-pound title tournament which begins March 3 at UFC on FX 2. Other participants in the tournament include former WEC title challenger Joseph Benavidez, Shooto champion Yasuhiro Urushitani and Tachi Palace Fights titleholder Ian McCall.

The WEC’s inaugural bantamweight champion, Wineland (Pictured) had a four-fight winning streak snapped in his UFC debut against another former WEC champion, Urijah Faber. After dropping a unanimous nod to “The California Kid” at UFC 128, Wineland was outpointed by Faber’s teammate, Benavidez, at UFC Live 5 in August.

Bedford comes fresh off an excellent showing in the “TUF 14” house, fighting his way to the semifinals before being knocked out by eventual season champion John Dodson. “Brutal” lived up to his nickname in his official UFC debut against castmate Louis Gaudinot at the live finale on Dec. 3, battering his smaller opponent en route to a third-round technical knockout.
