Jamie Point vs. Trey Williams

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

Williams choked Point out cold.
Point comes out throwing hands, but Williams changes levels and then comes back up to hold him in a clinch on the fence. Williams hits a takedown, can’t hold Point on the ground and comes back up. Now it’s Point in the outside position in the clinch, throwing knees and holding Williams on the fence. Williams cracks Point with a couple hard uppercuts and gets a warning from referee Kim Winslow to mind the fingers on his open hand when striking. Back to the fence they go, Williams holding Point in place with an underhook. They come off the cage and Williams tosses his opponent to the ground, then follows to slap on an anaconda choke. Point throws a couple short punches before he goes unconscious, and referee Winslow stops the fight soon after.

The Official Result

Trey Williams def. Jamie Point via Technical Submission (Anaconda Choke) R1

Donavon Frelow vs. Taylor McCorriston

Round 1

Frelow lands a pair of low kicks and then swarms McCorriston with punches, dropping the “Ninja” with a flurry of rights and lefts. McCorriston is down but not out, trying to recover as Frelow chases him to the ground and tries to set up a guillotine as he rolls to guard. Frelow loses the choke and winds up underneath McCorriston, who scrambles to take back-mount as Frelow stands up. Standing with McCorriston latched onto his back with a body triangle, Frelow leans against the fence and traps McCorriston’s left arm while the right arm fishes for a choke. Frelow eventually shakes him loose, and the flyweights reset on their feet with one minute left in the round. More punches connect for Frelow, again charging McCorriston against the cage, where they spend the final 20 seconds in a clinch.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 McCorriston

Round 2

Frelow took a split decision over McCorriston.
Frelow starts the second round same as the first, landing leg kicks and then shoving McCorriston against the fence. McCorriston backs up and uses Frelow’s momentum to snap him to the ground and catch him in a brief front headlock. Frelow frees his head and stands, defending as McCorriston tries to turn the corner and take his back. McCorriston gives up on the back take and gets spun around, and Frelow presses him against the cage for half a minute until referee Chris Tognoni splits up the fighters. Frelow drops McCorriston with another barrage of punches and tries to pound him out with left hands on the ground, but McCorriston shrimps underneath and buries his head to survive the assault. Frelow hunts for a topside guillotine from half guard, nearly passes to mount but can’t extract his right foot from McCorriston’s legs. McCorriston puts him back in guard and swings his legs around to try an armbar, gets lifted off the ground and releases. McCorriston keeps the high guard and tries to control Frelow’s right arm, but there’s nothing there.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Frelow
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Frelow
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Frelow

Round 3

McCorriston connects with a short left hook and misses which a couple high kicks which nonetheless keep Frelow out of range. A few low kicks land for McCorriston before one catches Frelow on the cup. Frelow takes a minute to recover, and then the flyweights get back to business with McCorriston throwing more kicks. McCorriston shoots a double-leg midway through the round and gets stuffed. He stands up and spins around Frelow’s left side to try and take his back as they tangle near the fence. Frelow escapes and walks forward on McCorriston, firing off a few leg kicks before McCorriston changes levels for another shot. This one yields a takedown for McCorriston with about 25 seconds left on the clock. McCorriston leans right to left across Frelow’s body in half guard but doesn’t do much with the position, while Frelow stays busy throwing elbows from underneath.

Soslan Abanokov vs. Jordan Rinaldi

Round 1

Abanokov opens up with leg kicks, answered in turn by Rinaldi as the featherweights test the distance while moving all around the cage. Abanokov catches a low kick and decks Rinaldi to the ground with a right straight and a trip, but Rinaldi immediately sweeps to top position and sets up in side control on the Russian’s right side. Abanokov gives up his back as he tries to roll and escape, and Rinaldi capitalizes, securing back mount with a body triangle just two minutes into the round. Rinaldi starts hunting for a rear-naked choke, softening up Abanokov with short left hands to the ribs while working to snake his right arm around the neck. Punches to the face open up a small cut on Abanokov’s nose, but he’s defending well, keeping Rinaldi’s hands out from under his chin. Abanokov tries to explode and twist around to top position; Rinaldi sticks with him and shoves his opponent to the ground, now back in Abanokov’s half guard with 30 seconds left in the round. Rinaldi closes out the first frame throwing punches from half guard.

Round 2

Rinaldi tapped out Abanokov.
Abanokov connects with a couple punches early before Rinaldi gets hold of him and drags him to the ground about 40 seconds into the round. This time, Abanokov is able to sweep to top position relatively quickly, but he can’t do much on top before Rinaldi is able to toss him off and stand using butterfly guard. Midway through the round, the featherweights are back on their feet, and Abanokov misses with a spinning-back kick. Rinaldi walks down his man, backing up to avoid big arm punches from Abanokov and then changing levels for a single-leg attempt against the fence. Abanokov stuffs the shot at first, but Rinaldi gets it on the second effort, dumping Abanokov to the ground and landing in half guard. Rinaldi passes to mount inside the final minute and tries to unload with punches, though Abanokov squirms and makes for a moving target to suvive to the horn.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Rinaldi
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Rinaldi
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Rinaldi

Round 3

The featherweights tie up in the center of the cage, but soon it’s Rinaldi pushing the fight to the perimeter and dragging Abanokov back to the ground. Rinaldi leans left to right across Abanokov’s body and catches him in reverse mounted triangle choke. The choke isn’t tight enough to force a tap from Abanokov, so Rinaldi drops right hands on his opponent’s unprotected face before abandoning the strikes to work on a straight armbar. Abanokov clasps his hands, but Rinaldi yanks the right arm free and wrenches it to force a keylock submission.

The Official Result

Jordan Rinaldi def. Soslan Abanokov via Submission (Inverted Triangle Keylock) R3 3:02

Adam Cella vs. Danny Davis Jr.

Round 1

Davis scores in the opening exchange with a pair of left hooks in the pocket, then pushes Cella away with a front kick. A straight right hand puts Cella on his seat, but he pops back up right away and defends a takedown as Davis tries to single-leg him against the fence. Davis switches to a body lock but Cella has a wide base and stays upright. They separate briefly, but Davis soon goes after the takedown again, working for a high double on the fence midway through the opening round. With 1:50 on the clock, Davis lifts and slams Cella, landing in the former “Ultimate Fighter” cast member’s closed guard. With Davis in the process of throwing ground-and-pound, referee Steve Mazzagatti issues a stand-up order with 50 seconds left. Davis lands a few more straight right hands as the welterweights trade shots in the closing moments.

Round 2

Davis Jr. easily bested Cella.
Davis floors Cella with a pair of punches about 30 seconds into the round, then hits the kneeling Cella with an illegal soccer kick to the face as Davis rushes to capitalize. Davis immediately recognizes the foul and stops fighting. Referee Mazzagatti deducts a point from Davis, and the fight resumes after Cella takes a minute to recover. Cella starts finding his mark with a few punches, but as soon as he does, Davis changes levels and drives him to the ground. Davis winds up back in closed guard with Cella controlling his arms, neutralizing most of Davis’ ground-and-pound. Davis pulls his arms free midway through the period and gets off three or four hard shots before Cella wraps him up again. Davis lands a few elbows before passing to half guard, where the offense drops off again. At the 10-second clapper, Davis gets busy, swinging punches over the top until the horn sounds.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 9-9
Chris Nelson scores the round 9-9
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 9-9

Round 3

Cella presses forward at the start of the round but can’t find his range with punches and kicks as Davis backpedals. About one minute in, Davis reverses the momentum and takes down Cella again. Davis tries to strike but has his arms controlled by Cella, leading to another restart by referee Mazzagatti two minutes into the round. Cella defends a single-leg against the fence and tries to walk Davis off the cage, but “Dee1” switches to a double and gets the takedown with about 90 seconds on the clock. Davis spends a minute extracting himself from Cella’s guard, finally postures up and starts landing some hammer fists. Cella swings his legs around in the final 10 seconds, looking for a last-ditch armbar attempt, but he only gets more punches to the face.

Bryson Hansen vs. Rudy Morales

Round 1

Hansen lands a hard inside low kick and is warned by referee Kim Winslow to mind the fingers on his outstretched hand as the bantamweights test the range. The Hawaiian changes levels near the fence and drags Morales to the ground with ease, then lifts and drops his opponent to loosen Morales’ grip on his arms. Short, hard elbows score for Hansen through the guard, slicing Morales open on the outside corner of his left eye. Morales is clinging on tightly underneath, trying to negate the space and stop any further ground-and-pound, but Hansen is still getting through with some good elbow strikes. With 1:45 left in the round, referee Winslow stands up the fighters and wants to have the doctor check on Morales’ cut. Morales is cleared to continue, and the fighters are restarted on their feet. Hansen soon hits another takedown and resumes his striking from half guard. With 20 seconds on the clock, Hansen seems to be framing up an arm-triangle choke as Morales sits up. Morales rolls through and finishes the round on his back, fending off Hansen’s advances.

Round 2

Hansen upped his record to 8-2.
Hansen takes about 30 seconds to bring Morales back to the ground, and this time the Hawaiian works from side control on Morales’ right side. Morales reclaims half guard but he’s still eating elbows, still leaking blood which is now smeared all over both fighters. The strikes add another cut, this time on the right side of Morales’ face. Morales sits up against the cage with just under two minutes remaining, and Hansen isolates his opponent’s legs to make sure Morales stays grounded. Short punches from Hansen keep the action on the ground as Morales struggles to stand. Morales finally gets back to his feet with 20 seconds on the clock and spends the remainder of the round fending off a single-leg attempt from Hansen.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Hansen
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Hansen
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Hansen

Round 3

Morales whiffs on a high kick but cracks Hansen with a flying knee. Unfortunately for Morales, the jumping strike leaves him open to another takedown, and now Hansen has him on his back less than 40 seconds into the final frame. Referee Winslow takes a close look as the bantamweights grapple at the bottom of the fence, Hansen controlling positionally but not offering much in the way of offense. Hansen is heavy in Morales’ half guard, keeping “Ruthless Rudy” on his back even as Morales squirms away from the cage. Back toward the fence they go, and now Morales gets back to his feet for a brief moment, only to be dragged back down. Morales tries to push off the fence with his feet, puts Hansen back in his open guard and throws punches in the final 30 seconds. Hansen fends off a last-second armbar attempt and jumps to his feet at the horn to celebrate what should be a one-sided decision.

Brendan Kornberger vs. Krasimir Mladenov

Round 1

The middleweights test the range for the opening minute before Mladenov shoots in and puts Kornberger against the fence with a body lock. After a few seconds of clinching, Mladenov rips his man off the cage and tosses him to the ground. When Kornberger gets back up, Mladenov keeps a rear waistlock and pulls him right back down. Back up again comes Kornberger, still held against the cage but now scoring with knees to the legs and midsection of the Bulgarian. They separate and Kornberger puts a kick on Mladenov’s midsection as the fighters circle with 30 seconds on the clock. Kornberger steps into the pocket with a leg kick, which is caught by Mladenov and converted to another takedown. Mladenov stands over his prone opponent as the horn sounds.

Mladenov coasted to victory at WSOF 17.
Mladenov catches another low kick and once again uses it to shove Kornberger to the ground. Kornberger works back to his feet near the fence, but he can’t escape Mladenov and is soon tossed back to the ground. Mladenov keeps hold of a rear body lock as Kornberger gets to a knee, then back up to his feet. Kornberger gets some space and tries to walk forward on Mladenov with strikes, but Mladenov just catches another kick and dumps him to the mat. The middleweights are back up with 90 seconds on the clock, clinching on the fence. They separate with one minute to go and Kornberger advances toward Mladenov but can’t land any significant offense, partly due to inactivity and partly due to Mladenov’s evasiveness.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Mladenov
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Mladenov
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Mladenov

Round 3

Kornberger lands some outside leg kicks in the opening minute, and this time Mladenov is unable to grab hold and turn them into takedowns. The American gets a few left hands in before Mladenov closes the gap and bullies him against the fence with an underhook. Mladenov gets the rear waistlock but Kornberger turns around and pushes him away, and now they reset in the center midway through the final round. Mladenov shoots a double-leg, switches to a single and spins Kornberger to the canvas right in the middle of the cage. Kornberger gets to his knees and stands even as Mladenov threatens with a front headlock. Back to striking they go, but only for a few seconds, as Mladenov clinches up after blocking a head kick. Now it’s Kornberger initiating a brief clinch on the cage. Mladenov turns it around with an underhook, but Kornberger is the fresher man in the final minute and pushes him away again. With 25 seconds to go, Mladenov shoots a double and gets a takedown. Kornberger is back up right away, throwing elbows to the side of Mladenov’s head. Mladenov hits one final takedown just before the final horn sounds to end the fight.

Joe Condon vs. Jonathan Nunez

Round 1

Nunez gets a quick takedown and works to extract his arms, which Condon is pinning down in his closed guard. Pulling his right arm free, Nunez sends a couple punches over the top before wrapping Condon’s left arm behind his back. Nunez releases the arm and stands to reposition himself, coming back down into Condon’s guard. Condon drives forward to his knees, defends a headlock and has his back taken as Nunez turns around the back. Nunez goes straight after a rear-naked choke, but Condon gives a thumbs-up to referee Mark Smith before escaping the choke and powering back to his feet. After a brief clinch on the fence, Condon has a high kick blocked by Nunez, who answers with a straight right over the top.

Round 2

Nunez hits another fast takedown, but this time Condon is quick to bounce back to his feet. Nunez keeps hold of the late replacement, first with a rear waistlock and then an underhook. As they separate, Nunez connects with a short left hand. The lightweights move back to the center of the cage, where they trade jabs and both miss with punches. Nunez eventually drives Condon back down with a high double-leg off a caught kick. Condon gets to a knee, then back to his feet, where he peels away Nunez’s hands and circles back to the middle. A straight right from Nunez opens up a small cut on the bridge of Condon’s nose as they trade strikes in the final 30 seconds.

Round 3

Condon shocked Nunez in the third round.
Condon gets taken down to start the round and once again gets right back up. He escapes Nunez’s clinch and circles out to meet “Johnny Boy” in the center, where the lightweights resume their tepid striking. Nunez scores with a right hand over the top, but the local favorite’s output is low because he’s seeking to counter-punch against the equally inactive Condon. Midway through the round, they’re back in the clinch, Condon on the outside, trying to throw knees. Nunez pushes him away, blocks a high kick but eats a couple punches from Condon as the fight enters its final 90 seconds. Condon sprawls on a takedown with 50 seconds to go and snares Nunez in a guillotine choke. Condon pulls guard and cranks on the choke, turning Nunez’s head upside down, and Nunez is forced to submit. It’s a shocking, come-from-behind win for Joe Condon with under a minute left on the clock.

The Official Result

Joe Condon def. Jonathan Nunez via Submission (Guillotine Choke) R3 4:22

Jake Shields vs. Brian Foster

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Shields made it look easy.
Foster sticks a couple jabs in Shields’ face and turns around with a back-kick to the jiu-jitsu specialist’s midsection. Shields closes the distance and clinches up, then trips Foster to the ground, but Foster rolls him over the top and scrambles to his feet. Shields gets his second takedown and passes to side control less than 90 seconds into the round. Fifteen seconds later, Shields is in full mount, his right arm wrapped behind Foster’s head, in position for an arm-triangle choke. Foster takes a couple left hands to the head before trying to explode out of the position, and he winds up with Shields on his back.

Shields goes for a rear-naked choke, can’t get under Foster’s chin and instead pulls back with a nasty neck crank that forces Foster to tap out with a quickness.

The Official Result

Jake Shields def. Brian Foster via Submission (Neck Crank) R1 2:51
