Isaac Gutierrez vs. Victor Valenzuela

Round 1
Gutierrez moves back and forth around the perimeter, sticking his jab in the face of “Joe Boxer.” Valenzuela is having trouble connecting as he works from the center, but after a minute, he starts finding Gutierrez’s face with wide right hands. They clinch up and Gutierrez lands a low knee, but referee Jason McCoy doesn’t see it and tells the lightweights to fight on. Gutierrez gets clipped with another right, shoots on Valenzuela’s legs and is denied. Gutierrez drops Valenzuela with a left on the temple, but Valenzuela quickly regains his senses and avoids the follow-up shots on the ground. Gutierrez gets in on a double-leg and takes down Valenzuela at the base of the fence. Valenzuela gets up and drops Gutierrez with a nice counter left hook before the horn.

Round 2
Valenzuela begins the second frame attacking Gutierrez’s body, then switches to the head and forces the younger fighter to his knees as he tries for a takedown. Gutierrez is trapped on his knees with Valenzuela dropping steady right hands from the back with one hook in. The referee tells Gutierrez to fight back, and he does with an over-the-shoulder elbow. That’s all Gutierrez can muster, though, as Valenzuela keeps the punches coming until he sees a rear-naked choke opportunity. Valenzuela slips his left arm underneath Gutierrez’s chin and squeezes to force the tap at 2:41 of round one.

Jared Papazian vs. John Robles

Round 1
Papazian gets clipped with a right hand and starts jawing at Robles before connecting with a kick to the body. Robles comes back with another nice right hand and the striking slows a little as the bantamweights wade in and out of range. The former training partners strike tentatively, both looking to find their distance. Papazian gets dropped with a right hand late in the round but he pops right back to his feet and withstands Robles’ late assault.

Round 2
Papazian grabs hold of a kick and drives Robles to the ground, and the “Jackhammer” connects with some solid ground-and-pound before Robles is able to escape to his feet. Again there are tentative exchanges on the feet with Robles trying to close the gap on the former UFC competitor. Papazian scores with a couple leg kicks, eats a straight punch. Inside the last minute, Papazian is making Diaz-esque gestures, encouraging Robles to come and strike. Robles obliges with a solid right hand, but that’s the only action before the horn.

Round 3
Robles is swinging for the fences, throwing big shots at Papazian’s head but coming up short. Papazian is working leg kicks and combinations, and he stuffs a takedown about a minute into the round. Robles has a combination deflected and gets a finger-wag from Papazian. A high kick is blocked by Robles, but Papazian follows up with a pair of punches to the head. With 95 seconds remaining, Papazian rushes at Robles with a combination at the fence. Papazian has a low kick checked and a high kick blocked, but his shots are coming closer than Robles’ at this point. More combinations down the stretch from Papazian, including a couple which end in hard left hands.

Official result: The judges score the bout 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28, all in favor of the winner by unanimous decision, Jared Papazian.

Lewis Gonzales vs. Antonio McKee

Round 1
McKee takes 30 seconds before shooting on Gonzalez’s legs against the fence. Gonzalez sprawls impressively and stands up defend as “Mandingo” keeps working for the takedown with a bodylock. McKee switches back to a double and Gonzalez sprawls, then grabs a guillotine, but McKee traps Gonzalez’s other arm and forces him to the ground. Almost immediately, McKee steps into full mount, then sinks in both hooks as Gonzalez gives up his back. McKee tries a short choke, can’t get it and switches to put his left arm around Gonzalez’s throat. Gonzalez defends the RNC well, so McKee sits up and switches to a body triangle. When McKee starts riding high, Gonzalez squirms out the back door and gets on top to grind McKee’s face with his forearm before the horn.

Round 2
McKee shoots a double from far out and Gonzalez sprawls all over it. Gonzalez quickly sinks in a brabo choke, but McKee flattens himself out and loosens the grip. Switching to a modified guillotine, then back to a brabo, Gonzalez keeps working for the submission. When he can’t get the tap by the two-minute mark, Gonzalez sits up and punishes McKee with punches and elbows. McKee scoots over to the fence and continues to defend the choke attempts, but he can’t free his right leg to escape from underneath. More left hands from Gonzalez as the round enters its last minute, still with his right arm looped around McKee’s head. McKee finally pops his head free and drives forward, but Gonzalez sprawls on the double and finishes the round elbowing McKee’s ribs.

Round 3
Gonzalez begins round three the same as round two, sprawling on a shot from McKee and forcing him to the ground. This time, when Gonzalez sits up to strike, he lands an illegal elbow to the back of McKee’s head. Referee Jason McCoy pauses the action, and shortly afterward, waves off the fight. McCoy gets on the mic to explain that McKee told the doctor that he could not see, and the doctor advised McKee to stop the fight. As the elbow was inadvertent and more than half the fight has been completed, this will go to the judges’ scorecards for a technical decision.

Gerald Harris vs. Jorge Santiago

Round 1
Harris circles to his left around the outside while Santiago waits in the center of the cage, both men testing the waters by stepping in with punches. Harris comes over the top with a left, circles out and blocks a hard right high kick with his arm. Santiago has another high kick deflected midway through the round as the welterweights continue their give-and-take. Santiago chops inside with a leg kick, and Harris waits a moment before coming in to grab a leg and put Santiago on the cage. Harris changes to a double, then back to a single and lifts Santiago into the air. Santiago loops his arm over the top of the cage in mid-air and slaps on a triangle choke as he’s slammed back to the ground. Referee Michael Bell separates the fighters with seconds left in the round and deducts a point from Santiago for holding the cage.

Round 2
Santiago is battering Harris with nasty low kicks in the opening moments of round two, but it’s not long before Harris grabs hold of a leg and puts Santiago on his back. They scoot to the base of the fence with Santiago keeping a tight, high guard. The Brazilian opens up his guard and blocks punches from Harris, trying to grab an armbar. Santiago can’t catch the right arm, so he switches to the left. Harris snuffs out both and winds up in half-guard on Santiago’s right side with 90 seconds left. Short, stapling elbows fall on Santiago’s face in the closing moments of the round.

Round 3
An inside leg kick takes the base out from under Harris, and Santiago tries to take advantage by giving chase to the ground. Harris scrambles up and shoots, but Santiago is waiting this time and drills the kneeling Harris with a hard knee to the body.

Now it’s Santiago controlling with a front headlock, working Harris with short punches and knees before releasing and standing up. Harris shoots again soon after and Santiago sprawls, throwing more knees from the front headlock position. The action stalls and the welterweights stand, only for Harris to try another takedown, this time on the cage. Santiago widens his base and shoves Harris away, chasing the American with wide punches. When Santiago closes in, Harris drops for another single-leg which Santiago denies. The cycle repeats with 40 seconds left and referee Bell tells the fighters to work. Santiago does, getting busy with a left hand and uppercuts as he stuffs one more takedown attempt.

Gesias Cavalcante vs. Tyson Griffin

Round 1
Cavalcante pokes at Griffin with a jab, moving him to the outside, but Griffin comes right back with a front kick to get off the fence. A good one-two lands for Griffin and he goes back to cutting angles just outside of Cavalcante’s reach. Cavalcante ducks a high kick, takes a slapping low kick on the outside. Halfway through the round, Cavalcante steps in with a good combination but doesn’t follow up and allows Griffin to land a pair of hard leg kicks. Griffin fakes a shot and comes upstairs with a good hook. The next time, Griffin is really looking for a takedown, but Cavalcante stands him up. Griffin grabs a single-leg and drives Cavalcante to the ground just as time runs out, and referee Jason McCoy has to tell Cavalcante to release a headlock after the horn.

Round 2
Cavalcante sprawls on a takedown early and the lightweights stall out until referee McCoy orders them back up. It’s Cavalcante keeping busy as they strike in close range, pumping jabs and swinging hooks, but Griffin is landing leg kicks as well. Griffin sticks a counter right off a Cavalcante leg kick and then puts JZ’s back against the cage with an underhook. Cavalcante separates and hits Griffin with a right, then a right-left as Griffin backs up to the fence. They come out to the center and Griffin slips a few punches to score outside leg kicks. Griffin misses an uppercut, takes a counter left hook on the cheek. The lightweight exchange hard leg kicks and Griffin tags Cavalcante on the chin with a hook. Both men dodge head kicks and Cavalcante gets the last word with a straight left.

Round 3
Griffin sticks a left in Cavalcante’s face to start the round, so Cavalcante grabs a leg and plows him to the ground. JZ sits up to throw elbows through Griffin’s open guard, but Griffin is doing well to defend. Cavalcante passes to half-guard on Griffin’s right, then advances to mount. Griffin gives up his back and Cavalcante puts his right arm around his throat, then begins bashing away with left hands. Griffin is absorbing punches but does not appear to be in need of rescue; nonetheless, ref Jason McCoy intervenes. Griffin immediately jumps up to protest the stoppage, but it’s too late. JZ Cavalcante is the winner via TKO at 1:37 of round three.

Dave Huckaba vs. Ray Sefo

Round 1
Sefo stalks out from the center of the cage and pops Huckaba with a quick, hard leg kick outside. Huckaba answers with a kick to Sefo’s lead thigh, and “Sugarfoot” has a spinning back fist deflected off Huckaba’s hands. Sefo is closing in, inching Huckaba toward the fence while the American keeps his guard high. Huckaba moves to the middle now and catches Sefo with a straight punch, then comes in to clinch and pushes Sefo against the fence. Sefo gets off the cage, but Huckaba puts him right back with overhooks. Huckaba botches a throw and winds up with Sefo on top of him in cross-side control. Sefo pins Huckaba’s right arm and works for a crucifix, but the WSOF president runs out of time before he can inflict any damage.

Round 2
Sefo drives Huckaba backward into the fence with a spinning back kick. Huckaba comes right back to get in Sefo’s face and connect with a left hook. A leg kick and punching combo from Sefo gets a smile and a nod from Huckaba, and the heavyweights start throwing hands. Huckaba tries a high double-leg and Sefo backpedals to the fence in order to defend. As they clinch, Huckaba catches Sefo with a knee to the groin, and ref Michael Bell pauses the action. Sefo takes a few seconds to recover and they restart with about 3:15 remaining. Sefo lands a leg kick but takes a hard counter hook from Huckaba, who follows up with more punches on the outside. Sefo nods and tells Sefo to come forward, only they wind up clinched on the fence. They separate and Sefo starts working Huckaba’s thigh with kicks.

Short left hook inside connects for Sefo, and the big men finally slow down with about a minute left. Sefo pops Huckaba with a pair of jabs, then misses with a high kick. Sefo is slow to turn around, and when he does, Huckaba is waiting with a hard left hook. Sefo is dazed from the first punch and Huckaba knows it. The “Bad Man” swarms all over Sefo, bombing with hooks and uppercuts as Sefo somehow maintains consciousness with his back against the cage. Sefo isn’t going down but he is taking huge shots, and referee Bell has seen enough. Dave Huckaba picks up a big TKO win at 4:32 of round two.

Keon Caldwell vs. Nick Newell

Round 1
The lightweights open up exchanging kicks both low and high until Newell slips on a kick and winds up on his back. He drives forward on a single-leg, can’t finish it but is able to hold Caldwell against the fence.

Newell keeps working and eventually finishes the takedown, but Caldwell is quickly back to his feet. Newell holds him on the fence and backs up to strike, lands a spinning elbow and hits another takedown. This time, Newell quickly allows Caldwell back to his feet and they resume striking with more kicks. Newell stays in the pocket after a kick and eats a straight punch, but he scores a takedown shortly after. Caldwell leaves his neck exposed and Newell wastes no time in capitalizing, sinking in a guillotine choke and cinching it tight to get the tap at 2:07 of round one.

Brandon Hempleman vs. Marlon Moraes

Round 1
Short, crisp punches are thrown by both bantamweights early, with Hempleman pulling up short and Moraes connecting with a counter while circling the outside. Hempleman is bloodied by the 60-second mark, but he comes forward on Moraes anyway and takes a hard leg kick for his trouble. Hempleman has a left high kick blocked and gets scorched with a straight counter from Moraes. The Brazilian swarms on his fallen opponent, trying to finish the fight with ground-and-pound, but a bloodied Hempleman is able to wrap up Moraes and survive. Ninety second left and Moraes is tangled up in Hempleman’s closed guard, trying to get some space with a can opener. Hammer-fists connect for Moraes, whose face is now stained with Hempleman’s blood. With 40 seconds to go, ref Michael Bell stands them up and sends Hempleman to be checked by the doctor. The doc clears Hempleman, who comes back out throwing kicks at Moraes’ lead leg and dodges a spinning kick at the horn.

Round 2
It’s a slow start to the middle stanza until Hempleman gets caught kicking and is tripped to the floor. Moraes follows him down and Hempleman tries to sneak his bruised legs up for an armbar or triangle. Moraes shoves him against the fence and tries to keep busy with short punches, but it’s not enough for ref Bell, who stands them up about halfway through the round. Hempleman tries to counter a low kick with a right hook but Moraes covers up. The next kick from Moraes has Hempleman limping around, hopping on his right leg and trying to keep vertical. Another kick and Hempleman is barely standing, even trying to roll underneath for a kneebar. Moraes wants him back on the feet, so Hempleman stands and switches stances, standing just outside of Moraes’ range to the end of the frame.

Round 3
Moraes goes back to work, trying to kick out the lead leg of Hempleman, who seems to have recovered a little between rounds. The leg kick output slows as Hempleman goes back to the southpaw stance; now, Moraes is catching him in the pocket with right hooks. Moraes is picking his shots down the stretch, wading in and out, even trying a few spinning attacks that come up short.

Tyrone Spong vs. Angel DeAnda

Round 1
Jason McCoy is the referee for tonight’s 205-pound main event. Spong touches first with a low kick and blocks a counter right hook. DeAnda grazes with a right straight on the end of a combination and takes a hard kick to the gut, then one to the leg. Spong has a high, tight guard and is deflecting almost everything DeAnda is throwing his way so far. DeAnda comes to the clinch and gets an uppercut through the middle. Halfway through the round and Spong is closing in on his opponent, pushing DeAnda toward the fence. The kickboxer snipes with a jab and blocks a left hand; the punches are sparse, but Spong is whipping kicks at DeAnda’s lead leg with frequency. Spong clinches and releases, catching DeAnda with a cracking right hook as they disengage. DeAnda throws the last combo of the round and puts a kick on Spong’s gut before the horn.

Round 2
Spong chops the leg out from underneath DeAnda in the opening moments of the round. He allows DeAnda back up and starts attacking a little more aggressively, getting in DeAnda’s face with punches and grabbing the Thai plum to throw knees up the middle. DeAnda, for his part, keeps the wide punches flying at Spong’s head. More of them are getting through now, but if they hurt Spong he’s certainly not showing it. DeAnda tries to get some respite from the strikes with a single-leg on the fence, but he can’t hold Spong there for long. DeAnda is starting to find his range and slug Spong with punches when DeAnda’s mouthguard falls out and ref McCoy pauses the action just before the end of the round.

Round 3
Spong seems to be playing it conservative in the final round, walking forward on DeAnda but not throwing much in the way of offense. DeAnda looks for a takedown inside the last two minutes and is turned away. Spong just keeps stalking, putting kicks on DeAnda’s legs and body. One kick to the gut appears to hurt DeAnda, so Spong swings an uppercut on the same side just before time runs out.
