Alvarez Not Fighting ‘JZ’ in Dream
Greg Savage Jun 22, 2009
Despite reports to the contrary, Bellator FC’s first lightweight
champion Eddie
Alvarez will not be facing American Top Team product Gesias "JZ"
Cavalcante in Japanese promotion Dream this September.
Alvarez’s manager, Monte Cox, informed Sherdog.com that the newly minted titleholder is under an exclusive agreement with Bellator at the moment, though they would like to head back to Dream should the opportunity present itself in the future.
“We have a deal with Bellator,” said Cox. “I don’t know where
[reports of the Cavalcante fight] came from. We were offered the
fight, but we cannot do it contractually. Now, if Bellator wanted
to sign off on it maybe, but I don’t see that happening.”
When contacted, an official from Bellator FC made it clear the upstart promotion does not intend to allow Alvarez to take the fight.
Matchmaker Matt Stansel did not mince words in declaring the proposed match a no-go.
“Eddie is under contract with Bellator, and he will not be fighting JZ in September,” said Stansel.
Stansel also indicated the organization’s second season is due to begin in either September or October and that it will be televised on a yet-to-be-named English language station.
