Joe Son Arrested on 1990 Gang Rape Charge

Joseph Hyungmin Son -- better known as UFC veteran Joe Son to diehard MMA fans -- was arrested Oct. 7 in Huntington Beach, Calif., on charges related to a 1990 Christmas Eve gang rape. Son, who was already in custody for an unrelated vandalism charge, was linked to the 1990 crime when he gave a DNA sample to authorities following a probation violation. A second assailant tied to the 1990 crime is still at large.

TMZ.com and the Orange County Register were the first to report Son’s arrest.

Son has been charged with five felony counts of forcible rape, two felony counts of forcible sodomy, two felony counts of sodomy in concert by force, seven felony counts of forcible oral copulations, one felony count of sexual penetration by foreign object by force, and sentencing enhancements for kidnapping to commit sexual assault, personal use of a firearm, use of a firearm during a sex offense, and great bodily injury to sexual assault victim.

If convicted, the 39-year-old Son faces a maximum sentence of 275 years to life in prison. He is being held on $1 million bail.

Son, along with a second suspect, is accused of dragging the victim into the back of a car, pistol whipping her, threatening her life at gun point while he counted the bullets in his gun, and raping, sodomizing, and forcing her to orally copulate him repeatedly, according to a release from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Son is also accused of sexually penetrating the victim with his firearm before she was released naked with her pants tied around her eyes.

Son, who was submitted by Keith Hackney at 1994’s UFC 4 after being struck in his groin repeatedly, is also remembered for his dramatic entrances in which he dragged a large wooden stake to the cage on his back. He also briefly stood in as Kimo Leopoldo’s manager at UFC 3, and later earned the role of Random Task in Mike Meyer’s 1997 blockbuster film “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.”

After an embarrassing 54-second loss at the Pride’s short-lived “The Best” series in 2002, a Speedo-clad Son retired from competition with a record of 0-4.
