Penn Fights at UFC 107; Sanchez Offered Bout
Thursday, September 03, 2009
by Loretta Hunt (lhunt@sherdog.com)

B.J. Penn will defend his lightweight title at UFC 107 on Dec. 12 at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., according to the promotion’s president Dana White.

White appeared on a 40-second video at the fighter’s Web site, BJPenn.com, which was posted on Thursday. The video appeared to be shot following a meeting between Penn, White, UFC majority owner Lorenzo Fertitta, and members of Penn’s camp.

White did not announce who the 30-year-old Hawaiian will face next.

Diego Sanchez has been offered the Dec. 12 bout, according to a source close to the matchup, but the bout could not be confirmed yet.

Sanchez’s management was not immediately available for comment.

Penn scored a fourth-round submission against Kenny Florian in their title bout at UFC 101 in August, his 4th win in five fights for the 155-pound division.

Penn lost to welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre via a fourth-round techincal knockout at UFC 94 last January in Las Vegas. Penn and his camp contested the bout afterward, alleging that the French-Canadian fighter and his corner had improperly used greasing agents to give St. Pierre an advantage. Following its investigation, the Nevada State Athletic Commission did not file a complaint with the fighter or his camp.

Sanchez, 28, is riding a four-fight victory streak in the Octagon, dispatching Joe Stevenson at UFC 95 last February and Clay Guida, via a close split decision, at “The Ultimate Fighter 9” Finale in June.

“The Ultimate Fighter 10” coaches Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson have been rumored to also headline the Dec. 12 event, though no formal announcement has been made by the promotion.
