ProElite ‘Big Guns’ Play-by-Play and Results -- Penn, Arlovski, Sylvia

Sherdog.com will report from the iWireless Center in Moline, Ill., at approximately 8:10 p.m. ET with play-by-play and live results of ProElite "Big Guns," which features former UFC heavyweight champions Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia, as well as Reagan Penn, the brother of B.J. Penn.

Monaghan won quickly.
Richard McCraw vs. Todd Monaghan
Round 1
Monaghan, swinging wildly, powers his way inside and bullies McCraw to the canvas. As McCraw turns to try to get back to his feet, Monaghan latches onto his neck and cinches a rear naked-choke. A defensive McCraw tried to get to his feet but was pulled back to the mat where Monaghan sunk his hooks and induced the tapout at just 29 seconds of the first period.



Waylon Lowe vs. Floyd Hodges
Round 1
After a short feeling out period, Lowe lands an inside low kick and sinks a crouching Hodges with a takedown. Lowe, a four-time UFC veteran, sets up in half-guard and works both the head and body of Hodges. Lowe continues to employ a slow-paced attack while Hodges hangs on for dear life. With less than a minute left in the frame, Lowe tries to pass but is stymied. He slings a few more shots to the body before the horn sounds. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Lowe.

Round 2

Lowe stopped Hodges.
Lowe takes the center of the circular cage to begin the second round. He opens with a couple of low kicks that miss their mark before shooting a left hand down the pipe that catches Hodges. Hodges tries to answer with a right hand but catches only air. His next right hand lands in a glancing manner. Lowe delivers a stiff low kick that elicits a nod from his opponent. Lowe then lands a blistering left hook that drops Hodges. After a brief respite to admire his handy work, Lowe pounces on his fallen opponent and lands a slew of unanswered hammer fists. Hodges gets his wits back as well as his guard and forces a standup with less than a minute left in the round. A game Hodges tries to answer back but can’t find Lowe, who darts in and out of range, landing a couple more low kicks to cement
a dominant round. Sherdog scores the frame 10-8 for Lowe.

The ringside physician is inspecting Hodges' jaw. He waves off the fight, giving Waylon Lowe the TKO victory at the end of round two. The stoppage is announced as being due to a jaw injury.

Richard Odoms vs. Rod Housley
Round 1
Odoms lands a powerful one-two and pushes his foe into the cage. Housley is trapped against the fence, unable to get away from Odoms, who continues to control him with an underhook. Housley finally gets double underhooks and separates. Housley lands a jab with little impact. Heavy body shot from Odoms, as he closes the distance and renews the clinching along the cage. Very little action, and Housley breaks off again. Stiff left hand for Odoms as he closes the distance again, and Housley counters and circles away. Odoms lands an inside low kick. Hard pair of body kicks for Odoms land, and Housley looks for a takedown. Odoms pounds away on his head. Housley completes the takedown at the bell.

Round 2

Odoms cruised against Housley.
Inside leg kick by Odoms, and Housley shoots. Odoms shuts him down, and cracks the flattened out Housley with two right hands. Odoms sets up in full guard and pounds away, but Housley scrambles and gets in on his legs. Odoms gets his balance and shimmies up the fence to his feet. Odoms cracks his heel into the legs of Housley to stiffen him up, until they’re separated. The two trade jabs, and Housley takes a thumb to the eye, prompting a brief halt in the bout. The ringside physician enters the ring briefly, but the Ohioan wants to continue. The fight resumes, and Odoms lands an inside low kick, a cross, and then stuffs Housley’s takedown. The Texan spins around, and starts pounding on Housley, pinning his wrist.

“Excessive Force” tries to look for a kimura from all fours, but Odoms pounds out of it with knees to the body. Punches to the ribs by Odoms before the bell.

Round 3
Housley quickly pushes Odoms into the cage and tries to look for a takedown. He knees to Odoms’ thighs. Odoms gets far wrist control on his opponent, but Housley knees him to the body. Odoms returns with a heavy hook. Housley smashes him into the fence again, but Odoms exposes his back, and rolls with a kimura. Though Housley escapes, Odoms ends up on top in quarters position, punching away. Housley continues to turtle, taking hammerfist after hammerfist. With 70 seconds to fight, Odoms backs away from Housley and lets him to his feet. The two sloppily punch before clinching, and Odoms takes Housley to the matt off of a guillotine attempt. Housley gets to his knees, but Odoms just stands up and punches him before the bell.

Official result: All three judges -- Sal D'Amato, Cesar Valdez and Matthew White -- score the fight 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, Richard Odoms. Odoms advances to the semifinals of the ProElite heavyweight tournament.

Cody Griffin vs. Justyn Riley
Round 1
Riley tries to land a volley of knees, and Griffin runs him onto the mat. They splash onto the canvas and Riley ends up getting on top as Griffin turtles face down. Riley controls the side and back, punching away and kneeing deep into the body. Halfway through the round, and Griffin is still trapped on his knees, getting punched under his arms, and kneed to the rips. Griffin tries to secure his opponent’s wrist, but Riley is grinding him down. Riley alternates sides now, drilling his belly-down foe with more knees to the body. Griffin finally gets back to his feet, but Riley grabs his neck and lands a series of heavy knees. Griffin punches his way out, and collects himself with 45 seconds to go in the round. Inside low kick for Riley lands hard. Horn.

Round 2

Griffin rallied on Riley.
Riley lands punches on his back foot as Griffin charges him. As Griffin looks for a takedown, the Nebraskan jumps a guillotine rather than defending it, giving up top position. Griffin sets up in half guard, as Riley tries to find a kimura from his back. Riley sinks it, and uses the submission to roll Griffin to his back. Riley sets up again with Griffin turtled underneath him, and Riley basing down, pounding him. Riley spins around and takes mount finally, and Griffin rolls, exposing his back. He bellies down, and Riley sits up, punching away by Griffin protects his head. Riley tries to sink a rear-naked choke before the bell but fails.

Round 3
Riley quickly resumes landing right hooks and knees, dominating Griffin further. The southpaw Riley steps in again, and gets hit right a series of right uppercuts that drops him. Out of nowhere, Riley is in a world of trouble, hitting the canvas and on his back. Griffin swarms on him, pounding away from above his guard. Riley is exhausted and just covers up, and Griffin doesn’t stop punching until referee Jay Estrada intervenes at 32 seconds of the third round. Cody Griffin advances to the semifinals of the ProElite heavyweight tournament with a rousing comeback.

Heun stopped Carpenter violently.
Ed Carpenter vs. Jake Heun
Round 1
Inside low kick quickly from Carpenter, and he runs Heun into the fence. Both men grinding with their heads inside, pummeling inside, as Carpenter drives the Alaskan into the fence. Carpenter drops low for the legs and gets a double-leg takedown. Heun trying for a kimura from the bottom, but Carpenter escapes, and sets up in full guard. Heun scrambles up to his feet deftly, but can’t land on the break. However, Heun comes back immediately with a head kick-left hook-right hook that drops Carpenter. The Chicagoan tries to escape, but he ends up on his side getting hammerfisted into oblivion. His mouthguard gets smashed out of his face, and referee Otto Torriero steps in to stop the fight at 3:17 of the first round.

Mark Ellis vs. Ryan Martinez
Round 1
Slow start as each man sizes the other up. Ellis jabs gently, trying to gauge distance. The orthodox Ellis circles to his left, jabbing but not landing. Very little action through two minutes.

Ellis shoots for a single, but Martinez sprawls out, turns the corner and lands hammerfists and right hands. Ellis gets back to his feet and separates. Head kick by Ellis is blocked. Ellis shoots again, and Martinez sprawls, cracking Ellis with a knee and a right hand on the way up. No more action before the horn ends a tepid round.

Round 2
Ellis continues to dance around Martinez, prompting his corner to yell at him to engage. Ellis shoots for a third time, and Martinez easily shuts him down and lands another knee, but this one is illegal. Referee Todd Frederickson sees it and pauses the action to make sure Ellis is good to go. After a brief pause, the action resumes. Ellis feinting frantically, but there’s no strikes coming and the crowd is getting restless. The former collegiate wrestling champ shoots again, and once more, Greeley, Colo., native easily shuts him down. The southpaw Martinez lands a lead right hook that knocks Ellis off balance. Martinez shuffles forward and throws a small left hook that glances. Ellis has done virtually nothing through two rounds but dance and change levels. Boos shower the cage before the horn.

Round 3

Martinez upset Ellis.
Martinez takes the center of the cage again and starts jabbing. Ellis runs into a right that knocks him off balance, but he quickly recovers. Ellis tries a lame shot with zero set up, and Martinez easily shuts the former Mizzou Tiger down. Martinez gets a front headlock and sprawls, basing down and controlling the wrestler. Ellis gets to his feet and tries to grab a single, but Martinez sprawls again, and just continues to put his weight on Ellis. Referee Todd Frederickson breaks them up after minutes of the same position. With 20 seconds to go, Ellis drops for a low single, and whiffs. Martinez dances with his hands down with 10 seconds left, and whizzes a head kick over Ellis. Ellis tries a liver kick, and Martinez catches it, kicking him to the canvas before the horn in a fitting symbol of the fight.

Official result: All three judges -- James Goodman, Brad Odom and Pat Morleyv -- score the fight 30-27 for Ryan Martinez, who pulls off the upset.

Reagan Penn vs. Evan Cutts
Round 1
Penn gets a quick single and tries to get into side control, but Cutts is on his feet quickly. The Hawaiian gets a front headlock, but Cutts escapes. Cutts finishes a takedown, and reaches side control. Penn scrambles to his feet, scoops his foe and slams him, setting up on top. Cutts tries to get up, and Penn tries to shuck him to his back, but Cutts instead gets another takedown. Penn gets back up to his feet and separates, raking Cutts with a series of left hooks before getting another takedown. Cutts escapes and gets a front headlock, locking up a figure-four grip around Penn’s neck, but Penn escapes and gets back to his feet. Up-down pace early, and both men look tired after four-and-a-half minutes. Cutts pushes Penn to the fence and knees him to the body twice. Penn escapes and gets in on Cutts’ legs, threatening with a takedown before the horn.

Round 2

Penn was no match for Cutts.
Penn wings punches, but Cutts jabs cleanly and snaps his head back. Right hand for Penn, but Cutts gets in on his legs and puts him on the mat. Cutts steps over Penn’s head, and punches him to the ribs to soften him. Penn with his head between Cutts’ legs, trying to roll to a double, but he can’t lock his hands, and Cutts sprawls down on him. Cutts looks for the anaconda choke set-up again, but Penn escapes and flops to his back. Cutts pounds away with rights as Penn looks for butterfly guard sweeps. Heavy rights coming from the Texan now. Cutts passes to side control, then mount, then takes Penn’s back. Cutts rolls back, and threatens with the rear-naked choke, locking in the body triangle with 80 seconds to go in the round.

Cutts can’t sink the choke, but Penn is exhausted, and Cutts flattens him out, pounding away before the horn. In the dying stages of the round, Cutts rolls back again and crossfaces Penn, looking for the choke once more.

Round 3
Cutts starts fast with his right hand, but Penn rips him back with one of his own. However, Penn is exhausted and Cutts turns the tables quickly, cracking the Hawaiian as he slips off balance, spilling to the mat. Cutts dives on top into half guard. Penn rolls to his seat and looks for a single, but Cutts controls him and put him back on the floor. Penn tries to defend Cutts’ pass to mount, and the crafty welterweight takes his back instead. Cutts sits up into full mount, and threatens with an arm-triangle choke. The Dallas native lets go of the choke and hammerfists instead. Penn gets half guard back halfway through the last frame. Penn manages to get back to his feet, but Cutts gets a bodylock, kneeing him in the stomach and dragging him to the fence. Penn tries to stop the knees, but “The Butcher” rips him to the face in turn. Penn drops for a single-leg, exhausted. Cutts sprawls and is in firm control with one minute to fight. Cutts looks for another anaconda choke, and tries to step into Penn, but nothing comes of it. Cutts controls the Hawaiian with a headlock, and Penn breaks free before the horn.

Official result: Judge Sal D'Amato has it 30-26, while Cesar Valdez and Matthew White have it 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, Evan Cutts.

Andrei Arlovski vs. Travis Fulton
Round 1
The shorter Fulton advances on Arlovski quickly, but few strikes follow. Fulton pushes Arlovski into the cage and secures double underhooks. The two press chests against the fence for a minute and a hald with no offense before they’re separated. More feinting from both fighters. Very little offense in the fight thus far. One-two for Arlovski glances Fulton. Arlovski and Fulton trade awkward kicks, and then Arlovski lands a right cross before the horn ends the tedious round.

Round 2

Arlovski melted Fulton with a kick.
Arlovski closes in on Fulton, clinching along the fence and taking the well-traveled vet down. Arlovski teases a potential leglock from above, but Fulton trips his heel and regains his feet. Inside low kick lands for Fulton. Attempted head kick by Fulton doesn’t reach its target. Arlovski continues to feint, but isn’t actually hitting Fulton. “The Pitbull” finally lands a jab to Fulton’s gut. More useless jabbing. This fight, quite simply, is terrible. Spinning back fist and a side kick for Arlovski end the round. Boos erupt at the horn.

Round 3
Arlovski quickly puts Fulton on the mat, crossfacing him from side control. He does very little pounding, controlling Fulton without much offense. Fulton is just hanging on from the bottom as Arlovski chips away. He regains his feet, and the crowd try to cheer the two on to some action the waning moments. Fulton leg kicks, but Arlovski goes high with a lead-leg head kick that crumbles “The Ironman” against the fence, unconscious. Referee Otto Torriero stops the bout at 4:59 of the third round, bringing a gruesome end to a fight that was gruesome in another way entirely.

Tim Sylvia vs. Andreas Kraniotakes
Round 1
After sizing each other up standing, Sylvia punches his way to Kraniotakes and pushes the German fighter into the cage, kneeing him in the legs. Kraniotakes turns Sylvia onto the cage, but the former UFC champ reverses him and renews him position. They separate, and Kraniotakes lands a spinning back elbow, and momentarily unloads on Sylvia before “The Maine-iac” clinches and pushes him into the cage again. Sylvia continues to grind away with short punches and knees to the body, but Kraniotakes drops levels and shoots a double-leg, pushing Sylvia into the fence until the bell.

Round 2

Sylvia decisioned Kraniotakes.
Sylvia resumes the clinching along the cage almost immediately, but after 90 seconds of no offense, referee Todd Frederickson separates them. Kraniotakes leaps forward to strike, and Sylvia immediately walls him along the fence and knees him in the stomach. Frederickson splits them up faster this time, and on the restart, Sylvia lands a low kick and a right cross before clinching along the cage again. After another separation, Kraniotakes tries a standing elbow, and Sylvia tags him, prompting a wild exchange where most of the crosses from both men miss. The German shoots, and Sylvia sprawls out with 40 seconds to fight. Sylvia shucks him over and gets top position, and lies in his guard until the round mercifully ends.

Round 3
The bout ends up in its familiar quarters, with Sylvia clinching Kraniotakes along the fence, grinding inside with punches and knees. When referee Todd Frederickson separates them, "Big Daddy" barrels forward into two jabs and an uppercut from Sylvia. More uppercuts follow at the Maine native pushes Kraniotakes into the fence. One more the action slows, and once more, Frederickson separates. The listless crowd has almost given up booing, as Sylvia and Kraniotakes separate once more. Again, Sylvia uppercuts his way into the clinch and controls Kraniotakes until the final horn ends the tough-to-watch affair.

Official result: All three judges -- Sal D'Amato, Cesar Valdez and Matthew White -- score the bout 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, and advancing to the semifinals of the ProElite heavyweight tournament, Tim Sylvia.
