California Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Organization, Inc. Announces 2011 Official California State Amateur MMA Championship

(PRESS RELEASE) -- The California Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Organization, Inc. (“CAMO”) announced today the schedule for the 2011 Official California State Championship for Amateur MMA. CAMO debuted the first ever official State Championship in 2010, with a single elimination tournament that began with over 200 athletes and culminated in a spectacular final in December 2010, that pitted Northern California champions vs. Southern California Champions in 8 weight classes. In 2010, Southern California dominated Northern California, winning 7 of the 8 championship bouts.

The 2011 California Amateur MMA State Championships will be open to qualified licensed CAMO athletes on an invitation only basis and will commence in 8 different regions across the state (Los Angeles, Orange County, San Bernardino/Riverside, San Diego, Bay Area, Sacramento, Central Valley, and Central Coast). Winners from each event will move on from the Regionals to the State Quarterfinals, then to the State Semi-Finals with the best finally meeting for the State Championship title in November/December 2011. The opening round brackets will be filled by selection from the chosen CAMO regional promoter in each region subject to approval by CAMO officials. Finalists from the 2010 State Championship will be guaranteed a spot in the opening round for the region they represented in 2010, provided they meet all of the requirements to be eligible for the tournament. The opening round of the State Championship will begin in August with exact dates and official promoters available on CAMO’s website (www.camo-mma.org). CAMO has chosen its top promoters in each region to host the various rounds of the championship tournament. The promoters are as follows:

“After the tremendous success of the 2010 California Amateur MMA State Championship, CAMO, the promoters and all of our athletes are extremely excited about the 2011 tournament,” stated Jeremy Lappen, CEO of CAMO. “The promoters putting on the regional events have done an incredible job of promoting events all year and we have no doubt that they will match the best fighters in each region to vie for the title in this year’s championship.” Jeremy Lappen went on to state that, “it was proven last year that California has unbelievable amateur mixed martial arts talent, and several of our champions from the past year have already gone on to great success at the pro mixed martial arts level. In fact, one of our past champions won the Gladiator Challenge championship in his very first fight as a professional. We look forward to seeing who will be crowned champions in 2011.”

The official event dates, rules and additional details on the State Championship will be posted on the CAMO website (www.camo-mma.org/Tournaments) in the coming weeks.

Free Seminar for Amateur Athletes

In keeping with its mission of providing valuable training for amateur mixed martial arts fighters and the MMA community, CAMO will host its second annual free seminar open to the public entitled “What You Need to Know Before You Go Pro” â„¢. The first annual event held during the weekend of the finals in 2010 brought an all star group of panelists including Bas Rutten, Josh Barnett and Razor Rob McCullough along with an experienced group of managers, promoters and PR professionals. Like last year, this year’s panel will give advice to the young, up and coming fighters about the business of being a professional mixed martial artist. “This is a very informative event for our amateur fighters,” explains CAMO President JT Steele. “The seminar gives our athletes the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the sport. For a young fighter to hear what the panel thinks is important for them to focus on, and to be able to ask the panel any questions they have is invaluable. It was a fantastic event last year and we look forward to making it even better in 2011.” The seminar will be held on the weekend of the California Amateur MMA State Championship Finals. Further details as they become available will be posted on the CAMO website (www.camo-mma.org).
