(Fresno, Calif.) ~ Fresno’s own Casey “The Underdog” Olson (5-0-0; Win-Loss-Draw) is slated for a major bout with Josh Smith (5-2-0; Win-Loss-Draw) on Sat. Jan. 20 (2007) at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.
“This is the biggest fight of my career to-date,” says Casey “The Underdog” Olson. “Every past cagefight and wrestling match has prepared me for this bout”. (This includes four consecutive winning cagefights at Tachi Palace, as well as a winning Fresno State wrestling match and a subsequent winning cagefight at the Save Mart Center).
The fight is in conjunction with the newly formed agreement between the WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting and the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). This event is also scheduled to be broadcast on Spike TV. Marco R. della Cava wrote in a front-page, cover story in USA TODAY (Dec. 5, 2006) — “UFC’s Spike TV… often outdraws NBA and baseball games among the coveted 18-to-34-year-old male demographics. Its pay-per-view bouts… pull in eight figures (1 million-plus viewers), and ufc.com has doubled its traffic to 2 million unique visitors a month in the past year.”
In fact, mixed martial arts will in the near future, some think, replace boxing on a national level. According to Chris Conrad of the Mail Tribune, Medford, Ore. (Dec. 10, 2006) — “Many have speculated that cagefighting, with its hyper-quick action and colorful characters, will replace boxing as the nation’s choice bloodsport.”
“To be able to fight with the WEC is a sincere honor and tremendous opportunity for me,” adds Olson. “It’s crazy to think that I’m going to Vegas for my own fight at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. It will be a memorable experience I will never forget.”
Olson is 26 years old, stands 5’8” and weighs 155 lbs.; Smith is 24 years old, stands 6’0” and weighs 155 lbs.
“I don’t know much about Josh Smith, but I hear he’s a good fighter and this will be a great fight,” concludes Olson. “I’ll do whatever it takes to win this fight. This is pretty much going to be an all-out war between the both of us!’
Olson’s statement is echoed by what Pulitzer Prize-winning author and two-time Tony Award nominated playwright David Mamet recently wrote in the December (2006) issue of Playboy— “Ultimate fighting (cage fighting)… is more than the biggest, most violent spectator sport of the past 10 years. It’s the new art of kicking ass.”
ABOUT CASEY “THE UNDERDOG” OLSON A talented, up-and-coming cagefighter, Casey “The Underdog” Olson is a product of Fresno State and its wrestling team (Bulldogs). He’s also an alumnus grappler of Fresno City College (Rams), Clovis High School (Cougars) and Tenaya Middle School (Chiefs).
In Dec. (2006), he was highlighted in the WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) program “Exposed” broadcast nationally on HDNet. Casey “The Underdog” Olson was featured with the article and photo essay in the Nov./Dec. (2006) issue of “HIS,” a bi-monthly, glossy magazine published in Fresno, Calif. In Oct.
