Déjà Vu for Vizcaya at M-1 Challenge XXII

(PRESS RELEASE) -- When Daniel Vizcaya flew into Moscow to fight Victor Nemkov at M-1 Challenge XXII last Friday night, he had one goal on his mind -- come home with the win and start climbing back up the light heavyweight contender’s ladder. Instead of victory, Vizcaya returned to the same nightmare from Sept 18th’s M-1 Selection Americas finals.

Almost three months from the day, Vizcaya was riding high on his streak into the 2010 Selections finals bout against striking phenom, Byron Byrd. After an aggressive start that pushed the pace, Vizcaya ended up in a dangerous triangle submission attempt. Picking up Byrd and slamming him into the canvass in hopes to escape only tightened up the squeeze and the “Bulldog’s” bark was silenced as the tap came at 2:43 of round one.

With a solid training camp at Power Martial Arts in Aurora, Illinois, Vizcaya made the trip to Moscow hell bent on shaking off the loss that ended his run at the Selections crown and to get back into contention for a future shot at the M-1 Challenge light heavyweight belt. Unfortunately his game plan didn’t go as intended and the “Bulldog’ found himself in an eerily similar position.

Pressing the action from the sound of the bell, Vizcaya went to the ground with Nemkov, the 2009 Selection runner-up and combat Sambo specialist, which was the beginning of the end. Within the first sixty seconds, Vizcaya found himself in the traps of a triangle; picking up Nemkov in hopes to slam out of the squeeze made the grip tighter as both fighters hadn’t even broke a sweat. Trying everything he could to escape to no avail, Vizcaya tapped at 1:11 of round one and sat silently and frustrated in the ring knowing that he couldn’t be further from redemption.

When Vizcaya makes his next return to the M-1 ring, the young fighter will certainly have to deal with do-or-die pressure.
