(PRESS RELEASE) -- Toronto | New York – Fight Network, the world’s
premier 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of
combat sports, has sponsored the BoxRun charity initiative, in
which former 11-time Canadian amateur boxing champion Mike Strange
runs 90 marathons in 90 days to raise money for children’s cancer
research.
All proceeds from the 2014 BoxRun will be donated to the McMaster University Stem Cell & Cancer Research Institute and Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada.
“Fight Network is proud to be involved in such a great cause,” said
Anthony Cicione, General Manager of Fight Network. “In addition to
being a Canadian boxing legend, Mike Strange’s charitable work is
truly inspirational. We’ve received great responses to some of our
past initiatives, including the annual Agency Wars amateur boxing
competition and our ongoing Dare to Defend women’s self-defense
seminars. We are excited to partner with Mike on his quest to knock
out childhood cancer.”
Labatt Brewing Company Ltd. will also be backing the initiative with Nike providing a run of special edition shirts.
Fight Network is sponsoring the post-run party at Real Sports Bar & Grill in downtown Toronto with special guests attending from the Canadian media and boxing industries.
Strange started Heater’s Heroes in 2011 to honor his mentor Robert “Heater” Lavelle, an annual event held in Niagara Falls to help local sick children in need. During his amateur career, Strange became the first Canadian boxer to win two gold medals at separate Commonwealth Games. He later represented Canada at three consecutive Olympic Games – Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000.
The original BoxRun took place in 2000 and raised over $100,000 for childhood cancer research. This year’s run began on May 8 in St. John’s, NL. and completes on Aug. 9 in Niagara Falls, ON.
“I have met so many brave children over the past few years who have been affected by cancer and other life-altering diseases,” Strange said. “After witnessing their innocence and strength, I feel I have to do whatever I can to help. That is why I run, I don’t have a choice.”
Direct deposit donations can be made at any TD Bank: Account 151-5221082 or online at www.BoxRun.org.
